About Alex Efstathios Voinas
My interest and expertise are in the intersection of AI research and human-centred design, mostly applied to the personalisation of health tech. I currently work at Cortrium, building AI pipelines for fully automating heart-health screening and arrhythmia diagnosis using ECG.My projects come from both industry and academia, all following the problem-first approach. I have co-founded RoGlove, a startup developing a wearable for gamifying hand rehabilitation while also tracking the hand joints’ health. In the past, I worked in neural signal processing and data analysis, developing a novel implant for advanced epilepsy diagnosis at NYU. Additionally, I have been involved with projects from the broader time-series prediction domain, such as optimising an investment portfolio or forecasting vessel trajectories based on their previous map locations. I did my master’s in Human-Centered AI at DTU Copenhagen and my bachelor’s in Electrical/Electronic Engineering at Imperial College London.

Student Data Scientist/Engineer
Co-Founder
Developing a wearable for the gamification of hand rehabilitation, capable of tracking the improvement of hand functionality and movement. Managing a small engineering and design team. Winner of DTU Skylab Ignite entrepreneurial competition, spring 2022.
Software Engineer
9-month Compulsory Milatry Service - Developed the front-end for a web app, using Vue.js and Bootstrap. Administered and supported the internet telephony infrastructure.
Junior Research Scientist/Engineer
- Pesaran Lab – NYU Center for Neural Science (CNS)
- Led the data analysis for quantitatively characterising and visualising the spatiotemporal dynamics of intraoperatively recorded human epileptiform local field potentials (inter-ictal spikes, high-frequency.
- Developed the pre/post-op experimental pipeline (including designing/fabricating mechanical parts, bench-testing electrode arrays and developing software solutions to store, analyse and operate data in the clinical EEG.
- Developed the calibration setup and control software for a projector-scope used to deliver spatiotemporal light patterns for optogenetic stimulation with micron spatial resolution for studying the interhemispheric.
- CAD design, fabrication and testing of mechanical parts and gaskets for neural implants used for electrophysiological and optical interaction with the cortex.
Digital Design Engineer
Undertook the strategy and design process from idea to product, specializing in Web Apps/Platforms, Mobile Apps, 2D/3D Digital Experiences and Brand Identities. Based in NYC, working both with local as well as global clients coming from Boston, London (UK) and Athens (Greece).
Design Engineer
Designed and developed the UX/front-end (Webflow, Vue.js, Bootstrap) for a web deep-learning framework enabling the evolutionary analysis of proteins by decomposing them into a set of motif embeddings. The trained neural networks are visualised to generate biological insight and help protein design and new drug discovery.
Product Designer
- My tasks included: doing research on UX and new functionality, designing the architecture and UI for new features, and creating software prototypes to illustrate ideas. Milestones:
- “bTeam” web information and communication management platform: I set the design foundation for the mobile app, designed the “To Do” module and its integrations to the rest of the platform, redesigned the “Addressee”.
- Web-based Maritime ERP system: Analyzed, designed and handed guidelines to the developers for three mobile apps: “Inspector”, “On Board Inventory”, “Clever-i”.
