About Alex King

I'm deeply passionate about lean principles and continuous improvement across technology spheres as a whole, and with space exploration in particular. It's hard to express the breadth of my background, but I have been working in technology and technology related industries for thirty years, and continuously strive to better myself and those around me. I'm never willing to settle. This time has afforded me outstanding expertise in software engineering, information technology, embedded systems, and virtually all related disciplines as well as a broad range of leadership experience.I take great pleasure in developing and evolving highly performant organizations through conversation and innovation. I'm presently focused on how I can apply this broad and deep expertise to positively transforming organizations through digital transformation and the introduction of all aspects of DevOps, cloud, and Platform Engineering principles, practices, and culture to accelerate delivery of business value. In addition to digital transformation and evolution, my technology passions extend to 3D modeling and printing, LED lighting systems, IoT and embedded hardware and software, and have a number of open source projects published on GitHub. Outside of that, I'm an avid woodworker, house remodeler, explorer, and follower of all things science fiction. You can follow my blog at https://medium.com/@alexwking/past-present-and-future-stories-81e5ad777a49

I've always been extremely passionate about the operational efficiency of organizations, and how to drive continuous improvement. Usually, this manifests in IT and across the software development lifecycle, but best-in-class approaches apply anywhere that software is used. Should you use SAFe? LEAN? SCRUM? Is NIST better than OWASP? How do you move to a risk based approach to security and compliance? Datacenter or Cloud? What shapes of organizations perform better? It can be hard for organizations and individuals that have focused on getting the job done for years to make the decisions that will enable the business to jump to the next level.I'm here to ask difficult questions and help you make solid decisions to deliver more, faster.

Led a team responsible for transforming a legacy multi-datacenter operation into the cloud, using AWS and Netflix OSS tooling. In 2015, ground-based software ran as a set of manually deployed and administered monolithic applications running in the datacenter. We were seeing stability issues with the software, and there was a lot of organizational siloing. We've taken advantage of a broad range of technologies in order to go from days-to-weeks deployment cycles to minutes, and - while we're helping development teams evolve to the "You build it, You run it" model, we also built similar tooling to support embedded software builds for the applications that run on aircraft. We started with a small group of talented individuals and have grown in strength and knowledge through technologies such as Amazon Web Services, GitLab, Jenkins, Spinnaker, Artifactory, Packer, Ansible, and standards such as PCI, Sarbanes-Oxley, and AS9115, to the point where we have contributed Foremast as an add-on to Spinnaker back to the community. We accomplished so much starting from ground-zero, reaching the point where we reduced outages due to change to near-zero while simultaneously increasing deployment cadence six fold, eliminated the need for a change control board while streamlining compliance in a SOX/ PCI DSS Level 1 environment, and so much more.
