KBM builds a data management platform to collect data on individuals and create targetable profiles accessed via third-party integrations. The platform holds data on ~75K “segments” (identifying detail of a person) for ~300M individuals worldwide.At KBM I automated a process to generate segments in Redshift by loading data from S3, running queries, and importing segments into an on-premise Solr cloud. I was their first dedicated Hadoop SME for a small initial project with ~20 nodes. I also aggregated various application logs using Kafka and Impala so engineers could monitor apps from a centralized location (see link for more tech details) and built a “linking engine” (Spark, Kafka, HBase) to positively identify users via cookies and either merge/append segments into existing profiles or create new profiles. My work also included Aerospike optimization, where I streamlined the load process by migrating from PHP to Java that led to refresh times being reduced from weeks to hours.

I was hired by this video ad startup (~20 employees) to serve as a data science SME while pursuing acquisition. I learned Java on-the-job to build integrations with adtech firm APIs including AppNexus and Adap.tv to increase revenue and minimize risk. These feeds hold campaign data use to price ads in a timely fashion. I also built ETL jobs in Cascading and developed monitoring solutions using Icinga (Nagios fork) with alerts routed to appropriate parties.

I was hired at Arrow as a Senior Business Analyst and was promoted to Manager of Business Analytics and finally Senior Manager of Big Data in 2014. In my last role I managed a team of data scientists that served as an internal consultancy for various business groups.My team used machine learning algorithms on large datasets to make better inventory and pricing decisions. I built a data acquisition platform to acquire pricing and inventory data using a Cloudera Hadoop cluster, Python/Scikit-learn, and R. This project’s success led to Arrow’s decision to expand the team. I set up a Hadoop cluster from scratch (including OS installation) and used the cluster and geoip enrichment on a large volume of part searches to identify parts reaching end-of-life with strong market demand and a lack of substitutes. I also led development of predictive models to estimate future value of used electronics (phone, laptops, etc.) for the asset disposition group.Technologies used in this role included R, Python, Scikit-learn, Hadoop, and Hive.
