Historically, a company’s wealth was determined by tangible assets and product sales. With the recent changes in the post manufacturing era, intangible assets, such as intellectual capital have become ever more important as a measurement of a company’s wealth and health. As intellectual capital manager, Al is responsible for developing the technical aspects to best exploit, protect, and defend the intellectual capital for the Safety, Shelter, and Water lines of business in DuPont’s Safety and Construction division. In this role, Al helps to develop and implement IP strategies, optimizing the cost-benefit of controlling and protecting a wide array of IP, including, but not limited to, patents, licenses, trademarks, confidentiality agreements, and peer reviewed or other journal publications. This position gives Al an exceptional opportunity, that of becoming a technical mentor to his fellow researchers by becoming actively involved with many different aspects of projects and programs. Currently, Al has responsibility of a patent portfolio of greater than 500 patents/patent applications.

Al is currently the technology leader of the R&D efforts in ion exchange within the Dow Water and Process Solutions Business. His most recent focus is toward product developments for the catalysis and chemical processing industries. Al has a strong technical curiosity that helps him get to the heart of the problems at hand. He then finds intelligible solutions to these complex problems. An example of this skill was shown during the recent development of a resin used in oil refining for the biodiesel and renewable diesel industries. In a related success, Al solved a critical issue associated with catalyst for biodiesel manufacture, that of the lifetime of the catalyst when subjected to many, varying, feedstocks. He determined what types of fouling mechanisms occur with the catalyst, and then working closely with customers, developed a resin that is used prior to the catalyst to remove the foulants.

Al joined the emulsion PSA synthesis group of Rohm and Haas in 2001. Immediately, Al became a valued contributor to projects for tape and label adhesives with focus on the better understanding of EHA based polymers and high solids latex emulsions. Prior to joining Rohm and Haas, Al spent 10 years with Stepan, a surfactant supplier, which has made him an invaluable resource across many functional areas within Rohm and Haas. Some specific examples follow:• Working closely with specific customer, successfully launched Rohm and Haas’ first emulsion PSA at greater than 60% solids.• Working closely with applications scientists, developed a formulated curtain coating adhesive based on aforementioned product that was the first polymer to exceed the top coating speed limit on commercial coating line.• Determined composition, process, and proprietary surfactant for successful design of Painter’s Tape binder.• Evaluated various compositions, stabilizing packages, processes for definition of polyolefin film product prototype.

Working in a strongly technical service focused organization, Al was responsible for the following:• Researched novel surfactants for a wide array of application areas (later transferred to lead water-borne polymer group); research centered on invention of novel surfactants to overcome polymer technical needs (VOC reductions, APE alternates, non-migrating surfactants). This research lead to an entire family of patent protection.• Researched carbohydrates as surfactant and formulation precursors.• Developed and conducted pilot plant trials of novel enzymatic process for manufacture of natural food ingredient products that lead to patent protection.• Process development incorporating renewable resources e.g. biodiesel.• Developed novel amide preparation process.• Developed manufacturing process for novel polyurethane catalyst.
