About Alfred Hermida Ph.D.
An award-winning digital news pioneer, digital media scholar and journalism educator, I am a full professor in the School of Journalism, Writing, and Media at the University of British Columbia, and co-founder of The Conversation Canada. I was director of the School for five plus years, from June 2015 to December 2020.With more than two decades of experience in digital journalism, my research explores the transformation of media, with a focus on emerging news practices, media innovation, social media and data journalism.My most recent book co-authored with Mary Lynn Young, Data Journalism and the Regeneration of News (Routledge 2019), reveals how the growth of data journalism has been cultivated and sustained by professional identities, tools and technologies, and new forms of collaboration and computational thinking. I am the author of Tell Everyone: Why We Share and Why It Matters (DoubleDay, 2014), winner of the 2015 National Business Book Award. The Globe and Mail described the book as “wonderfully clear eyed about contemporary culture,” commending its “lucid, energetic prose.” I am co-author of Participatory Journalism: Guarding Open Gates at Online Newspapers (Wiley Blackwell, 2011), and co-editor of The Sage Handbook of Digital Journalism (Sage, 2016)My work has appeared in Digital Journalism, Journalism Practice, Journalism Studies and the Journal of Computer-Mediated Studies among others. I was named an IBM CAS Canada Research Faculty Fellow in 2010-12, and won the 2011 UBC President’s Award for Public Education Through Media. I was also recognised in the 2011 Digi Awards for as one of Canada’s top three social media mavens.I won a 2010 Canadian Online Publishing Award for best blog for Reportr.net. A student social media project I co-supervised received a 2013 Excellence in New Communication Award from the Society for New Communication Research. I was a Knight-Wallace Journalism fellow in 2005, the first digital journalist selected for this honor. I am a 16-year veteran of the BBC and was a founding news editor of the BBC News website in 1997. During my four years as daily news editor, the site won the BAFTA for best news website four years in a row.
