Training programs and Economic Development in the Film Industry SectorWe are excited to inform you that a group of young engaged filmmakers and producers have recently created a new organization to promote young people, particularly young women, who wish to enter the film industry. The Non-Profit Organisation AL-DAR aims to empower young storytellers, create new job opportunities for youth, and push the Iraqi artistic and cultural sphere to engage critically with social issues and create societal cohesion. For this, we are currently developing two programs. Firstly, the AL-DAR Academy for Alternative Cinema will train writers, directors, camera women, men, designers, and animators through hands-on workshops with national and international experts. Over the first year, between 80 and 100 participants will broaden their critical thinking, organizational, and team leadership skills to integrate rapidly into the Iraqi arts and culture scene while setting them up to collaborate with international partners. Secondly, the AL-DAR Film Fund will allow young Iraqi artists to tell their stories through the medium of cinema, with a special focus on promoting underrepresented and vulnerable individuals, such as youth coming from disfavoured neighborhoods or regions, and young women aspiring to become artists. Ten films related to issues of gender equality, children’s rights, human rights, and cross-community cooperation will be selected and supported throughout the production process, allowing around 120 young people to make their first experiences in artistically rich and professional filmmaking.
