The journey from industrial internships to Ph.D. was one big streak in problem-solving. The scope of problem-solving ranged from finding the root cause of the malfunctioning gear shifting lever to finding the equilibrium conditions in energy storage materials. Now I am looking for new opportunities.While working on fuel cells in Thermax Ltd., I learned the importance of understanding the fundamentals of materials to develop emerging technologies. After that, I got admitted to MTech in materials science at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. I worked on structure-property relationships in electrochemical catalysts to synthesize oxygen and hydrogen from seawater. I carried out my Ph.D. research at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. During my Ph.D., I studied the interrelationships between microstructural and compositional properties of energy storage materials. In particular, I studied nickel oxide and its use in supercapacitors. However, the fundamental study has its application in battery technology and solid oxide fuel cells. Thus, the broad theme of my research tenure in MTech and Ph.D. can be written as: ‘finding the relation between microscopic details of materials and their measurable properties.’ The shift from being a pure mechanical engineer to a materials scientist has taught me to adapt to new situations and learn new subjects independently. The M-tech and Ph.D. tenure has made me ready to work in any materials or materials chemistry-related areas.
