My first experience working as a nurse afforded me the opportunity to assume a leadership role and respond to patient and hospital alarms on a frequent basis. Working at Roa Home Care was a unique experience, not only because it allowed me to practice as a nurse, but primarily due to the increased level of independence it provided, enabling me to support my colleagues during challenging times. Despite having received only two days of orientation, I was able to perform my duties exceptionally well, subsequently ensuring quality care for our patients.

This was the first time I worked in another country than Sweden and it was a beautiful experience where I had the opportunity to be very independent in my work in regard to handing out medicine to patients, being responisble for a ward alone. In this work place I met and cared for a patient who had very bad health conditions and helped him get better through medicine and hard work. This patient was initially chair bound (could not lie down) and after the time-consuming treatment managed to walk and gradually get better and better.

I had the opportunity to practice my practical skills in healthcare and thus gained an excellent insight into the work in healthcare. In addition, I learned how to communicate with patients and witness how the healthcare staff perform their work. I thus had direct contact with patients to further understand what their situation looks like and at the same time be more sympathetic for their situation. With this, I was able to develop as a care provider with the understanding to perform more patient-adapted care services.

Working at McDonald’s I expected to learn how to communicate with a variety of people since I worked from the cash registry, and I did just that. What followed with this experience is stressful situations and how to handle them in short as well as in long shifts.

This was the absolute first work experience I received in the health care and from this I gained valuable knowledge of hard work. I received the chance to see how every “small work machinery” interconnected to each other.
