Ali sustained a spinal cord injury (SCI) in 1996 as a tree, blown down in a wind storm, landed on her while she was sightseeing on holiday in Tenerife. In 2003, she left her employment in insurance to study at the University of Nottingham and graduated in 2006 with a first-class honours’ degree in Psychology. Ali is passionate about peer support and mentoring. She volunteers with, and has worked for, several SCI charities since 1998. After becoming a parent in 2008, she set up her own website/blog as a personal account of her early years of motherhood www.parentsinwheelchairs.com. Her Facebook peer support group ‘Parents in Wheelchairs’ now has over 580 members internationally.Ali is also passionate about maximizing the outcomes of rehabilitation following SCI and other long-term neurological conditions. She believes that rehabilitation does not have a definitive end point; but that it is an ever-changing process as life unfolds and brings new challenges. Ali has proven experience of academic and clinical research, clinical trial management, chairing and participating in expert panels/steering committees, public speaking, writing academic papers and community outreach. She has expert academic/clinical knowledge in the field of vocational rehabilitation for people with long-term neurological conditions.Having first-hand experience of living with the impact and associated complex physical and psychological issues of SCI for half of her life, Ali is committed to supporting, facilitating and developing disability services that aim to improve people’s quality of life.
