The aspect that I enjoyed the most about it was creating command-line utilities or scripts that automated most of my work away. This allowed me to dedicate my time to improving the actual application. Since I didn't have to worry about the busy work anymore, I was able to "get into the zone" easier and quickly work through multiple possible solutions until I found one that worked.
