About Ali Sillas

Ali is dedicated to advancing culturally-and linguistically-responsive social emotional learning and support practices, with a strong emphasis on mental health and community wellbeing. This work enhances the positive development of youth, and the professional growth of adults working with youth, to transform community and workplace settings. Ali is a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) from New Mexico with over 15 years of social work experience domestically and internationally. She is also a founding board member of SEL4NM, and a certified instructor for: Youth Mental Health First Aid, Teen Mental Health First Aid and the Nurtured Heart Approach.Her work in New Mexico has included: in-home services to youth and families, building case management services within School Based Health Centers, training youth peer support workers, and opening a peer-support drop-in center for transition-age young people who have experienced disconnection from school, work, family, and/or community. Ali is most proud of her role as a partner and a mama to five children who keep her humbled in her own SEL and wellness strategies; centering physical activities, adventures, joy, and family. CURRENT FOCUSStatewide Capacity BuildingAli collaborates to advance trauma-responsive SEL practices tailored to diverse cultural and environmental contexts, aiming to enhance mental wellness and overall wellbeing. She offers Youth Mental Health First Aid certification training and the Nurtured Heart Approach to schools and organizations, along with providing coaching and consultation. Through these efforts, she fosters the development of supportive communities of care that prioritize mental health and collective wellbeing for all.Behavioral Health InitiativeFuture Focused Education collaborates with youth and schools to create paid internship career paths in mental and behavioral health, to improve mental health and well-being for all. The program provides training in Youth Mental Health First Aid for school staff and Teen Mental Health First Aid for youth. Additionally, selected alumni have the opportunity to become certified Youth Peer Support Specialists, enabling them to lead mental health initiatives in their schools as part of the paid internship program. Teen Mental Health First Aid training can be integrated into group internships or classroom settings, offering schools flexibility in designing programs to address the current youth mental health crisis while cultivating future mental health professionals.

    Ali is helping spearhead an initiative with the New Mexico Public Education Department to develop a Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) framework that provides a theoretical foundation for integrating SEL into the infrastructure and classrooms of schools statewide. In partnership with the Leadership School Network (LSN), Ali has been supporting the Student Support Directors in building out and sharing their Culturally and Linguistically Responsive (CLR) Framework for centering and institutionalizing educational equity at the LSN schools. This also includes co-developing and facilitating professional development regarding these practices. Ali is lead on recruiting and carving out career pathways for young parents, within the X3 Internship Program. This includes developing responsive systems of support to meet the unique needs and challenges of young parents to contribute to a positive intergenerational impact on themselves, their career goals and their families. She is co-authoring practice and operations manuals for the X3 internship program and for a school within the LSN to build safe and inclusive learning environments.
