Graduate Student Research Assistant (Phd)
Dissertation Title: "Design and Testing Novel Wearable Instrumentation for Assessing Pelvic Floor Function and Exploring Continence Mechanisms"- Invented, made and clinically tested the first "Wearable Personal Uroflowmeter" (PUF) to quantify the urine leakage in incontinent patients, and record body movements to recognize the activity type simultaneously.- Developed the first subject-specific, multiphysics, finite element model of the urethra, capable of actively contracting its muscle layers along the fiber directions. This COMSOL model predicted the individual contribution of urethral muscle layers. The aim was to provide a platform for clinical researchers to evaluate the existing treatments for the stress urinary incontinence or come up with novel ones.- Collaborated with FemCare research and development group to develop and verify tools and methods to measure AI episodes in patients with urinary incontinence.
Senior Instrumentation Lead
- Design optimization and fabrication of the “Instrumented Speculum” device for the evaluation of the maternal recovery of the pelvic floor system in women from labor and delivery. The instrumented speculum is currently being used by multiple university hospitals by more than 40 Researchers.- Design optimization and fabrication of the “Quickstick” device, together with a remote-controlled, silent, release mechanism to measure simple and recognition reaction time to assess concussion and cognition levels. Selected as one of the UM inventions and presented at the University of Michigan 2014 Invention Reception.- Consulted multiple research teams and trained prospective students and engineers in their interdisciplinary design projects.- Tested devices on more than 60 human participants and analyzed data to test the formulated hypotheses.- Oversaw the data acquisition systems, sensors and 3D printing systems, and upgraded and purchased multi-grand equipment for the Biomechanics Research Lab.
Systems Integration & Design Engineer
- Designed, fabricated, and clinically tested the first point-of-service, wearable-by-clinician “Digital Manometry” system to help clinicians assess the function of the anorectal complex and make objective measurements of clinical interest. This invention received two awards for clinical testing:1. Michigan Translational Research and Commercialization (+$100,000)2. Coulter Foundation Translational Research Partnership Program Award (+$100,000/year)- Developed wirelessly connected wearable “fall detection sensors” to provide feedback and help train the elderly to fall so as to reduce the risk of hip injuries.
