I support the translation of innovation across the Faculty of Science. I identify new projects to bring into the technology transfer office and support their development from initial IP discussions, obtaining translational funding, market research and wider commercialisation.

I worked on innovations in cancer early detection and diagnosis, performing horizon scanning, evidence critique and impact assessments to help prioritise innovations and ultimately, help beneficial technologies undergo the correct evaluation to reach patients.

My research focused on investigating the use of cannabinoids for treating the aggressive brain cancer, glioblastoma multiforme. This included synthesis of cannabinoid derivaties, in vitro assessment of the molecules and studying the in vivo delivery. I used a combination of analytical techniques, including HPLC and 3D OrbiSIMS (Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry), to analyse and understand both the mechanism of action of the molecules, and their distribution in vivo.

I worked part-time alongside my PhD on a research project within the University on the development of a drug molecule for treatment of, for example, flu and COVID-19. This work allowed me to build skills in the design and development of an analytical method on the QExactive LCMS/MS and planning and undertaking in vivo work in mice.

Alongside my PhD research, I worked in the undergraduate labs as a teaching assistant both in the School of Pharmacy and Chemistry. I supported groups of students in their experiments, answering questions and guiding their learning as well as ensuring their good laboratory practice.

I undertook a 3 month placement within the R&D group, conducting an internal research project on stabilising proteins through spray drying. I gained experience in spray drying proteins with varying excipients and analysing stability by FTIR, DSC and HPLC.

I conducted a research training project within the School of Pharmacy into the viability of cells inside hydrogels. I expanded my understanding of hydrogels and their applications, cell culture and cell viability assays. I undertook training in mammalian cell culture and, once competent, cultured cells in various medium and conducted a number of viability assays. As part of the RSC outreach project with the University of Leicester, I worked with other students visiting local secondary schools in Leicestershire. RSC outreach hopes to encourage students to go on to higher education, and to consider studying a science. I helped to run sessions for year 8 and 9 students, where they took part in a practical experiment, and learnt about the science behind what they had done.
