For the second half of my year abroad I worked as an English teacher in the IT department at Air France. My role involved teaching English to employees in the department who were a variety of ages and abilities. The lessons took place in small groups and lasted for an hour. I had to prepare lessons in advance; these usually consisted of a PowerPoint presentation with recent news articles and grammar points that we would discuss in English, whilst I corrected any mistakes they were making. I really enjoyed my lessons as I felt a sense of achievement seeing their English improve whilst, in turn, my French also improved as I looked up topical vocabulary at the beginning of each lesson whilst I was preparing

During the first half of my year abroad I completed an internship at EY where I worked in the languages and translation department. This involved working closely with a small team of translators, prepping the documents so that they were ready for translation, putting the prepped documents in to SDL Trados Studio (the programme we used for translation) and then conducting a number check at the end of the translation. This number check was our method of quality control to ensure that the translation we provided included exactly the same figures as the source text. As an intern I had the chance to see the whole process of translation from start to finish as I completed the first and last tasks of the process. As a result I developed a comprehensive understanding of how translations are carried out and how important every member of the team was, whilst improving my level of fluency in German and my IT skills.

As a support worker my main tasks were helping the young people with day to day tasks, cooking, cleaning and the general maintenance of their home environment. Working for Macintyre charity was one of the most rewarding things I have done to date. I had very little understanding of, or experience with, autism before I started working there. However through interacting with the young people on a day to day basis and building relationships with them I have learnt invaluable lessons. Every day was different and although I was presented with many challenges, supporting the young people in their independence and everyday life made those challenges worth it.

I worked as a part time optical assistant whilst I was studying for my A Levels. This really helped with my time management skills as I had to make time for work whilst ensuring I had enough time to study. During my time at Specsavers I developed the ability to communicate well with a wide variety of people and became confident in managing many different situations. I enjoyed providing the highest level of customer service, whilst remaining patient and calm when required in stressful circumstances.
