Pregnancy is a wonderful but dynamic and challenging time where we are starting to understand that the time from conception through the early years has a profound impact on an individual's health. I want to improve early-life health so that children are all able to make the best of life.Sometimes diseases are only unmasked by pregnancy due to the high levels of pregnancy hormones. Through accurate diagnosis and testing new treatments for women who develop diseases of pregnancy, we can improve women's health during pregnancy and also that of the babies'.My current work includes: - Investigating the role of fat and circulating fats in the development of the gestational disease intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) at Imperial College London. - Evaluating clinical results of a trial investigating a potential new therapeutic for gestational diabetes and looking at treatment response in dynamic metabolic parameters. - Co-investigating early-stage potential treatments for ICP.My previous work has altered the Royal College of Obstetrician's Greentop Guidelines for diagnosis of ICP to include non-fasting blood bile acids as a more accurate reflection of disease severity. This work was particularly important as we also evaluated ethnicity-specific blood bile acid ranges, ensuring that the normal ranges were inclusive so that the disease can be accurately diagnosed. I have also been involved in numerous grant applications, ethical research applications, project management and report writing.Additional duties:- Lab management - Mentoring of junior colleagues- Human Tissue Act Named Person to ensure compliance of storage and use of human samples- Sustainability Officer working to improve sustainability within the lab through improving recycling policies and promoting awareness of efficient energy usage and reducing waste production.
