Antenatal ScreeningResponsible for leading the Specimen Reception team in receiving and processing whole blood and plasma samples in an antenatal screening laboratory. The laboratory offers a screening service for trisomy, namely; Down’s, Edwards’ and Patau’s Syndrome. I ensured efficiency from the point of sample entry to results being generated. Immunoassay analysis was carried out using Roche Cobas 6000 analysers, measuring levels of markers used to calculate the risk of trisomy. I also carried out Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) using the IONA protocol for Ion Torrent NGS when a high risk result was determined from immunoassay analysis. This includes: Extraction (QIAsymphony), Library preparation (SciClone) (Ion Chef), DNA Quantification (LabChip GX Touch), PCR (Eppendorf Mastercycler Pro Thermocycler) and Sequencing (Ion Proton). As part of my role I was also responsible for reviewing and updating all Specimen Reception SOPs, ensuring the information is correct and up to date. During my time at Colchester Hospital Biochemistry I achieved my IBMS registration through completion of a portfolio in under a year. The laboratory underwent a move to a new site with new analysers and computer systems. Working as part of a PhD research team on a project involving protein quantification in fish livers. My work involved making up a variety of solutions used in the process, centrifuging samples, protein dialysis and protein quantification.
