Alice immigrated to Canada when she was 12 years old. Barely spoke any English, Alice immediately found her way, making friends at school through drawings and art. Visual language amazed her; it’s universal, immediate, and accurate.Fascinated by visual communications, Alice studied Advertising Design at OCAD University, a top university for design and advertising in Canada. She received 3 years of scholarship at OCADU, and was hired an art director at FBC (one of the largest ad agencies in Canada), in her 3rd year. Alice’ projects included rebranding TD Bank, Coors Light, as well as pitched for The Hudson Bay. Alice then joined Zig Inc., which was a top ad agency in Canada with 90+ employees. During her 5 years working there, she worked on ad campaigns for Holt Renfrew, IKEA, pitched and won Microsoft by 2008. Alice’ ad campaigns won a number of awards and led her to Cannes Lion Advertising Festival, the Oscar of advertising. Being one of the first 2 mandarin speaking Art Directors in Canada, Alice was interviewed by a Chinese radio station, which led her to working with China Lion Film Distribution, owned by one of the largest film distributor in China. Alice was responsible of designing all the marketing materials so Chinese movies could be marketed and aired in North America, Australia & New Zealand. She did all this during evenings (China’s day time), while working 60 hours a week at her full time advertising job. A year later, Alice thought why not uses her Chinese background and her skill in visual communication to bridge the culture gap? She founded Magenta Design and in less than 6 years, Magenta Design served over 500 clients in Toronto, US and China. Magenta Design collaborates with some of the top marketing agencies in Toronto, Shenzhen and Shanghai. With more Chinese settling down in major metropolitan cities in North America, Alice sees endless opportunities to help local brands tap into this niche market and grow their business.
