Hi there! 😃 Learn more at my website https://www.alihkw.com/My name is Ali, and I’m an M.Sc. candidate at Mila & the University of Montréal, supervised by Prof. Liam Paull at the Montreal Robotics and Embodied AI Lab. My work lies at the intersection of AI and robotics. Ideally, I’d like to help with building truly general purpose robots that can (1) build flexible internal models of how the world works and (2) learn new skills from experience. Checkout ConceptFusion, our group’s latest work on constructing cool world models for robots!I am currently actively seeking out internship/full-time opportunities for when I graduate, starting summer 2023 or later. You can take a look at my resume here. If you’d like to get in touch, please don’t hesitate to email me at alihusein.kuwajerwala@x, x=umontreal.ca.Previously, I interned at the Alexa AI team at Amazon, where I worked on using large language models for querying databases. In between my undergrad and master’s I was a student researcher at the Robot, Vision and Learning Lab at the University of Toronto supervised by Prof. Florian Shkurti where I worked on visual navigation for mobile robots. I’ve also worked in software engineering roles at Epson and Liquid Analytics. My undergrad was at the Univeristy of Toronto where I studied CS & Math, and also worked as a Teaching Assistant. During my time there I was co-founder of the UTM Robotics Club, and a recpient of the NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award.I’ve also worked on a few fun coding projects which you can look at via my github profile. When I’m not staring at a screen all day, you can find me training jiu-jitsu, listening to audiobooks and podcasts, doodling, and/or chatting with wonderful people on my podcast. ✌️

Msc CandidateMila - Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute Sep 2021 - PresentMontreal, Quebec, Canada- Performed research to improve scene representations for robots using foundation models. -
Applied Scientist Intern, Alexa Ai TeamAmazon May 2022 - Oct 2022Toronto, Ontario, Canada- Improved the accuracy of the conversational NL2SQL system by 1.5% on the Spider NL2SQL dataset.- Prototyped alternative model architectures to overcome the 512 token length limitation in existing models.- Streamlined the team’s AWS model development cycle by automating several processes in the codebase. -
Machine Learning/Software EngineerLiquid Analytics Apr 2021 - Aug 2021United States• Developed highly scalable algorithms in Julia to quickly process logistics data for large distribution companies.• Set up queing infrastructure using AMQP and RabbitMQ to handle upto 300,000 requests each second.• Deployed AWS services to efficiently host our software in the cloud, simplifying the CI/CD pipeline. -
Robotics ResearcherRobot Vision And Learning Lab @ Uoft Sep 2020 - Mar 2021Greater Toronto Area, CanadaSupervisor: Prof. Florian ShkurtiTopic: Augmenting Imitation Experience via Equivariant RepresentationsFollowing my work on reachability analysis over the summer, I started work on a project regarding Equivariant Maps for image embeddings for data augmentation aimed at improving the navigation performance of autonomous robot systems. I am the co-author of the resulting paper and an essential contributor to the project; my responsibilities included: data collection, running simulation experiments, designing and debugging the ANN models we used, and refactoring the existing codebase, and setting up & running real robot experiments with the lab's Husky robot. After a few delays working with the Husky we are now preparing our results for publication. -
Undergraduate Researcher (Nserc Usra Position)Robot Vision And Learning Lab @ Uoft Jun 2020 - Aug 2020*Funded by my NSERC Undergraduate Student Research AwardSupervisor: Prof. Florian ShkurtiTopic: Backwards ReachabilityGoal: To provide safety guarantees for safety-critical systems with non-linear dynamics.• Conducted research on reachability analysis, attempting to efficiently compute the safe exploration sets of autonomous robots using Python, Matlab, and C++ with CUDA• Wrote and presented a deailed report + tutorial outlining the current state of the research and tools available. -
Teaching AssistantUniversity Of Toronto Sep 2017 - Apr 2020Ontario, Canada- Data Structures and Analysis (CSC263)- Intro to the Theory of Computation (CSC236)- Intro to Mobile Robotics (CSC477)• Taught new course material in weekly tutorials and worked through problem setswith students• Tutorial problems included topics suchas Disjoint Sets, Min Spanning Trees,QuickSort, Heaps etc -
Intern (Robotics Department)Epson Canada Jul 2018 - Apr 2019Toronto, Canada AreaDuring my time at Epson, I worked as a member of a research team that prototyped and developed core computer vision technologies for commercial bin picking robots. Working with bin picking robots daily, I learned how to calibrate cameras and set up experiments for 3D object detection, tracking and sensor fusion. Additionally, I evaluated and debugged algorithm prototypes. My main contribution during my time there was developing an ‘Evaluation Manager’ tool in C++ with a GUI that automated the evaluation process, drastically improving the amount of evaluations, up-to 5x, that could be performed each week.
