For the past seventeen years I have dedicated my talent and knowledge to implement, improve, and advance processes across our manufacturing operations globally. Although mostly focused on Multi-Layer Steel Cylinder Head Gasket products, there were diversions into other product groups such as bearings. A summary of my direct involvement as a hands- on project manager and engineer is sited bellow:Manufacturing Technology Transfer to India: Provide technical support on purchasing equipment for manufacturing CHG in India for local market consumption. This involves procuring equipment in China destined for India, installation and commissioning on site. Teaching junior engineering staff manufacturing technologies for this product line. Holding classes on fundamentals of each process with exams to evaluate absorption of knowledge. Hands on training to final customer process approvals.Fully Automated Assembly Machine: Design and build a global assembly machine to meet customer and internal requirements for USA, Germany and China. Machine includes articulated robots and Cartesian systems, eyelet X-Y stations, laser marking, transport system, vision inspection and sorting. Provide concepts for such a process and machine. Obtain internal approvals with consensus. Submit RFQ to perspective machine builders. Finalize vendor choice and manage design and build to commissioning and delivery to our global manufacturing sites. Budget $2M for each machine.Fully Automated Screen-Printing Line: Design and build a fully automated printing line for CHG manufacturing. This included application of solvent based coating and maintaining tight coating thickness tolerances within +/- 2 microns. Machine includes Cartesian systems, screen printing, alignment cameras, servo indexing table, vision inspection and sorting. Work with receiving plant staff and multiple outside vendors in Europe to bring this project to fruition within budget and on time. Five parts per cycle. Budget $1.6M.

Lead a team responsible for the design, development and manufacturing of automated machinery as related to new products and manufacturing process improvement for our North American operations. My direct responsibilities included overall coordination between R&D, the manufacturing plants, and my department (MDBG). Additional roles included project management, system design, mechanical design and review (mechanical desktop), capital submissions, purchase requisitions, PLC programming, project documentation, machine troubleshooting, and assembly and commissioning of new machinery as well as operator training at the manufacturing sites. My department was also responsible for supplying machinery to our South American, Far East and European operations. Effectively designed and fabricated automated machinery for manufacturing new products and significantly reduced the time to market. I was also directly responsible for a second successful plant startup of 150,000-sqft facility in Texas in 2000.

Plant Manager, El Paso, TX.Managed the most successful manufacturing plant start up in the history of Federal-Mogul Systems Protection Group, a 50,000-sqft facility in El Paso, Texas. I had direct responsibility for a $1.4M capital budget for a new manufacturing plant for existing and new products. The initial project was expected to take three years. It was completed within 18 months. First year’s shipments and gross margins exceeded plan. As a result of the successful completion of this project I was promoted to lead the MDBG. I was directly responsible for P&L, Manufacturing functions, Engineering and Maintenance. Total sales were $25M per annum. The plant environment was based on self-directed work teams with a flat organizational structure.

Transferred form the UK R&D operations to the US as a Manufacturing Engineer. I was promoted to the position of Engineering Manager shortly after. My team’s responsibilities included process automation and development, machinery design for in house manufacturing, new equipment specification and purchasing, plant and general maintenance, safety and ergonomics, MRP, product development and customer liaison, product transfer for manufacturing, product costing, cost reduction, FMEAs, APQP. By means of automation and product and process improvements I was able to convert existing low profit product lines into profitable products. The plant environment was based on self-directed work teams. I was instrumental in implementing the key mechanical systems to facilitate Federal-Mogul Systems Protection Group’s growth from $24M to $100M in sales.
