About Alis Le May

As a versatile and skilled designer, pattern cutter, and maker with a passion for textiles, I have been working as a bespoke tailor and dressmaker since 2015. I specialise in handcrafted, custom garments for private clients, and the film industry, drawing inspiration from my extensive collection of vintage clothing and textiles. Educated at the London College of Fashion, my expertise lies in pattern cutting, but I always find innovative ways to incorporate intriguing textile applications into my work. I am dedicated to creating sustainable, enduring pieces that can become cherished heirlooms, standing the test of time.In addition to my bespoke tailoring work, I am Co-Founder of social enterprise Clothworks Glasgow . Our mission is to empower individuals and communities through clothes making and mending. We collaborate with various communities to promote self-sufficiency and personal growth while fostering a sense of empowerment. As a social enterprise, we carry out projects that embody our core values, using clothes and craftsmanship to bring about positive change.

Alis Le May 2015 - Present
    Glasgow, United Kingdom
I am an experienced designer, pattern cutter, maker, and teacher. Since early 2015 I have been working as a bespoke tailor and dressmaker for private clients, and the film & tv industry. I use traditional techniques and do much of my tailoring by hand.I am fascinated by textiles, and although my specialism at London College of Fashion was pattern cutting, I have always found a way to experiment with interesting textile applications in my work and over the years have gathered a library of vintage clothing and textiles which are a constant source of inspiration.‍Believing in making clothes that are sustainable and last, I like to imagine the clothes I've made someday being heirlooms which have stood the test of time.In addition to tailoring for private clients, I work in costume for Film and TV productions such as Netflix production "Outlaw King,", Apple TV's "The Essex Serpent," and "Debutante," BBC drama "The Midnight Gang,", Amazon Studios "Good Omens," and Ridley Scott's "The Last Duel."

We work alongside communities to explore clothes making and mending as a means to encourage and support individual and community empowerment. We are a social enterprise who run projects exploring that premise. There are currently three main projects we run:MEND - Free workshops every month providing an opportunity, in a welcoming space, for anyone to learn to mend clothes. Too many mendable clothes are thrown away and it's not only satisfying to learn, but seems a good setting to feel less isolated and connect with the community in the East End of Glasgow.Glasgow Made - an online directory of brands and makers based in Glasgow, and whose production happens locally. It’s goal is to help people easily buy locally and promote the development of a sustainable local economy.Eastern Ground - The project consists of a series of workshops with young people from the East End of the city. They will be encouraged to connect with historic buildings and the nature found in this part of the city. Inspiration gathered from this experience will then be taken into the Clothworks studio and used when learning fashion design, sewing techniques, natural dying and print making. These workshops will be run by a range of practitioners who are specialists in their field. Support for the project comes from Glasgow City Heritage Trust and Creative Scotland.Past Projects:People Make Christmas was a community led project consisting of a series of arts events throughout December and a Christmas Day meal/drop in. In light of Covid-19, in person projects were impossible in 2020, but we did create a make your own mask resource consisting of video and written instruction. In addition, we made mask making kits distributed throughout Dennistoun. We are always open to do more across Glasgow and further afield.Get in touch if you would like us to run an event with your organisation, school, or community group.Find out more at: www.clothworksglasgow.org

Sew Over It provides sewing classes, patterns, fabrics and haberdashery supplies from their two London premises in Clapham and Islington. As a freelance tutor I taught a variety of classes, the majority of my lessons were focussed on creating simple jersey garments and helping to familiarise students with domestic overlockers. These informal, friendly classes enabled me to further develop my teaching skills.
  • Building Bloqs
Head Of Department: Fashion And Textiles
    Building Bloqs Jan 2016 - Dec 2016
    London, United Kingdom
Building BloQs is London's largest maker-space, offering professional manufacturing facilities for a wide range of disciplines. In late 2015 I approached Building BloQs seeking advice on how to start a similar facility that would cater for fashion and textile designers, as at that time there seemed to be little provision in London for independent designers to access professional sewing equipment and pattern cutting facilities. In January 2016 I joined the Building BloQs team to set up a fashion and textiles workshop within their existing facility, with plans to grow this workshop as they moved premises to a larger warehouse with the aid of local governmental funding. It was my responsibility to choose and source all the necessary tools and equipment, learn how to operate and trouble shoot a wide range of sewing machines, teach user of the space how to operate machines, promote and market the space through a variety of methods and generally oversee the smooth running of the workshop. To promote the opening of the space I organised (in collaboration with Fashion Revolutuion) a two-day student workshop, an evening exhibition of their work and a subsequent photoshoot documenting the garments created. This was an incredibly varied and challenging role that included everything from trouble-shooting machine problems with an oily spanner, to giving interviews with fashion bloggers and members of the press. I have since relocated to Glasgow but I look forward to watching the progress of this department, and the larger Building BloQs organisation, as they move forward to a new site and all the possibilities that brings.
