About Alison Bracker, Phd
I am an art historian specialising in contemporary art, culture, and travel. Since 2022, I've formally merged these passions into private tours for visitors to the French Riviera and the Venice Biennale.Art history, tour guiding, writing, lecturing, and editing share a common thread: Storytelling. I love uncovering and refining the narratives hidden in each activity. I've written and edited books and catalogues, published essays on international artists, and produced exhibition guides on Ai Weiwei, Anselm Kiefer, the Art of Australia, Édouard Manet, and David Hockney for the Royal Academy. My other global clients include renowned galleries and museums such as Roberts Projects (Los Angeles); Galerie Ferrero (Nice); Artwise Curators (London); Heydar Aliyev Foundation, Nar Gallery, Q Gallery, and Azerbaijan Carpet Museum (Baku); Network for Conservation of Contemporary Art Research (NeCCAR); Royal Academy of Arts (London); Saatchi Gallery (London); Parafin Gallery (London), and the James Freeman Gallery (London).

Events & Lectures Manager
I developed, coordinated, and ran a public programme of free and income-generating lectures, events, conferences & symposia, creative workshops & courses, book clubs, and salons inspired by temporary exhibitions, visual culture, and literature for a wide range of adult audiences. My programme was multi-disciplinary, exploring varied topics from diverse perspectives. Delivering approximately 50 events annually involved researching and planning ideas and participants for each event and managing every aspect of the event itself. I bore full responsibility for the Events and Lectures programme's strategy, progress, and annual budget. My role demanded enthusiastic engagement with current issues in visual and literary culture, dedication to fulfilling the learning and interpretation needs of diverse audiences, and collaboration with colleagues internally and externally. During my time at the RA, I forged new and ongoing partnerships with many organisations, including The Royal Opera House, the BFI, the V&A, Pin Drop, The Folio Society, King's College London, St. Christopher's Hospice, Small Things theatre group, the Hospital Club, and Pan Macmillan to provide exciting learning opportunities for adult audiences. Moreover, I was part of the RA's Social Media Team, helping to develop and disseminate the RA's social media strategy.
Co-Founder
We provided documentation & counsel on the presentation and maintenance of unconventional or impermanent works of contemporary art for artists, collectors, and institutions. We also organised and produced workshops and professional development packages, as well as topical seminars and symposia on contemporary art maintenance.
Research Consultant
I helped to advance the development of the Department of Fine Art’s research strategy by supporting and promoting practice-led research. I advised and assisted the department in the submission of successful research/grant bids, and fostered funding strategies and resources for practice-led research.
Post-Doctoral Researcher
As a Research Fellow at the RCA, I promoted Humanities-based conservation research by disseminating my ongoing personal research, as well as supervising research students in Conservation. I also organised the annual Research Students' Symposium, planned and chaired research workshops and research critiques for the Conservation Department's research students, and organised annual departmental study trips. I strove to improve the direction and development of the Conservation Department's research culture by creating research workshops, leading tutorials, and assisting with grant bids. In my initial role as a Post-Doctoral Researcher (1999-2002) for an AHRB-funded Research Project on 'The Conservation of Impermanent and Unconventional Materials in Contemporary Art,' I researched, published, and disseminated through international conferences information on the introduction and use of non-traditional and impermanent materials in current art practice, their significance in public and private collections, the deterioration processes involved, and existing and ethical strategies for their conservation. I conducted over 100 personal interviews with artists, conservators, curators, museum directors, gallery owners, and private collectors in the UK, US, and Europe on this topic. Furthermore, I managed the AHRB project budget, contributed to the teaching of conservation ethics to MA students in conservation, and supervised PhD students in conservation.
