About Alison Ellen
With my upbringing spread between Edinburgh and the Cairngorms, I've had the privilege to live with mountains on my doorstep and within a rooted, outdoor-focussed community that has supported me in fuelling what is now my deep love for mountain science, research and guiding.I have recently completed my first degree and Honours Project for BSc Environmental Geography and Outdoor Education in June 2023; where my thesis assessed the sustainabilty of mountaineering in the Valais Alps, Switzerland, in relation to mountain hut tourism. During my graduation ceremony, I was awarded the Contribution to Sustainability Award, which was awarded for best new contribution to sustainability within the department of Biological and Environmental Sciences.Over last summer I attended several Mountain Training workshops, including the attainment of my Summer Mountain Guide qualification, before starting my MSc in Sustainable Mountain Development in September 2023.My intentions for the upcoming spring are to complete my Master’s thesis, which will explore the relationship between Scottish winter climbing, climate and cliff-based vegetation in the Scottish Highlands between 1990-2024.
