Summer Scholars is a residential academic summer program at Clemson University for rising 7th-12th graders. As a counselor, I had the opportunity to mentor the next generation of potential Clemson Tigers by leading a weekly rotation of campers. I directly supervised camp activities (on and off campus) and addressed campers’ physical, emotional, and other needs outside of scheduled programs. Clemson’s Global Health Certificate Program is a 12-credit program that exposes health students to the challenges of health around the world. The culmination of the program is a four-week study abroad trip to Ollantaytambo, Peru. We worked with Ayni Wasi, a local NGO that promotes health in remote high-altitude communities. Their main focus is sustainability, recruiting, and training elected prometoras, or health promoters, who become the health provider for the community. While the program focuses on low-resource countries, it has also taught me what it means to be a global citizen and has given me a greater worldview that I will be able to carry into my life and work as a nurse.

I guided 36 residents through their freshman year experience by serving as an advisor and role model. My responsibilities included enforcement of Clemson Housing and Dining policies, crisis management, conflict mitigation, and planning/hosting events focused on Residential Learning. The Joseph F. Sullivan Center is a nurse-managed clinic located on Clemson University's campus that follows a collaborative model of care. I assisted in patient intakes, including recording vital signs, health histories, and chief complaints, and reported intake information to physicians. I also performed various technical skills including urinalysis, capillary puncture, and venipuncture support.

Prisma Health’s Externship Program is a 12-week immersive experience for rising senior BS Nursing students, totaling 370 hands-on clinical hours. Throughout the program, I worked with precepting nurses in the Intermediate ICU, Medical Telemetry, and Emergency Trauma Center. Clinical enhancement days at AirMed Medical Air Transport, the Greenville Memorial Hospital Cardiac Catheterization Lab, and Greenville County EMS were also included. The culmination of my externship experience was an investigational research project about the NIH Stroke Scale.

In my senior year of high school, I was selected for an internship program through my high school and the nearby regional hospital, Northside Hospital Forsyth. I spent ten months and over 130 clinical hours rotating through Surgical Services, ICU, Respiratory Therapy, and the Clinical Lab. My Surgical Services rotation included Pre-Op, OR, PACU, Phase II, and ERU. The Clinical Lab exposed me to the Blood Bank, Histology, Hematology, Analytical Chemistry, and Microbiology, and is where I completed my Phlebotomy Certification. Through this internship, I cemented my love of nursing and passion for caring for patients.

Midway Healthcare is a private practice that focuses on holistic and alternative medicine. Focus is placed on the use of chiropractic for pain alleviation. My main focus was patient tracking and determining ways we could work with patients to improve appointment attendance and subsequently improve their outcomes. I also contacted insurance companies when they rejected claims, determined what additional information they needed to accept these claims, and faxed the missing information. I became familiar with patient charts from constructing and pulling information from them. I used the patient data system ECLIPSE.

I was selected to participate in Young Dawgs, a research lab internship at the University of Georgia for high-achieving high school juniors and seniors interested in working in a STEM field. I interned in a biochemistry lab that was researching the effects that the eukaryotic regulatory protein calmodulin had on Adenylate Cyclase 1 (AC1), a transmembrane protein of the brain associated with memory. The purpose of this research project was to try to see how calmodulin interacted with AC1, and if calmodulin truly did improve AC1 and memory, if it could help cure Alzheimer’s disease.
