Dr Alison McCarthy is a research engineer at the University of Southern Queensland’s National Centre for Engineering in Agriculture developing robotic systems to improve productivity for agriculture. Her work in developing real-time control and monitoring systems has had a significant impact in improving on-farm practices and efficiency of irrigation water use and has attracted support from national stakeholder groups including farmers and rural industry research organisations such as Growcom and GRDC.She is currently working on cotton, dairy pasture, sugarcane and horticulture irrigation systems in Queensland, New South Wales, Tasmania and New Zealand. Alison has been awarded $2M in competitive research funding, and received many awards in recognition of her work, including co-recipient of the 2018 Cotton Seed Distributors Research of the Year Award, two 2014 Science and Innovation Awards for Young People in Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, being the Minister for Agriculture's Award and the Cotton Research and Development Corporation Award for her research developing a novel, low-cost camera-based method to estimate irrigation and fertiliser requirement of crops. Alison also received a prestigious Queensland Government DSITIA Early-Career Accelerate Fellowship in 2014 and a Young Tall Poppy Award (Queensland) in 2015.
