About Alison Palmer

I am one of the founders of Book Clubs in Schools (BCiS) www.bookclubsinschools.org. BCIS helps schools run interactive book clubs and provides all the training and materials necessary to do this. I wanted to set this programme up as I was concerned that children, including my own, were not reading for pleasure, and were missing out on all the benefits you gain from reading. The chances to visit other worlds and put yourself in someone else's footsteps. This feels even more important as we all navigate Covid-19 and the literal lockdown.BCiS wants to change young people’s attitudes towards reading for pleasure, build their communication and social skills, and develop transferable leadership skills through volunteering. The only programme which delivers Book Clubs to an entire year cohort and offers a dual benefit to schools, as older pupils have the opportunity to facilitate the Book Clubs as Book Club Leaders. The cost to join the programme is £750 to participate which covers all direct costs including training, badges, weekly questions and activities - in a school with a intake of 150 pupils the cost per pupil would be £5 - and for schools with a high pupil premium we can help source books too.
