About Alison Powell

I'm an expert in digital innovation. My work looks at the design choices, and organizational contexts that shape technology (policy) in the public interest. Keywords: public interest, design, citizenship, algorithmic accountability, governance, regulation.Past research has examined 'technology for good' startups, open-source software production, and the roles of citizens in smart cities. Current research focuses on democratic decision-making in data driven public sector work, including public consultation and health technology. I'm also known for using creative methods in my research and engagement including fiction, poetry, performance and participatory methods. See https://just-ai.net https://datawalking.uk and links belowI have been recognised as an LSE Innovator for teaching, and featured on BBC radio and print. Current Project: Deceptive Stories of TechnologyWhat is the significance of stories told about technology? Who tells them and how do certain interests get designed in to things like AI devices, while others aren't considered? What potential is there for other stories to be told? How do we get there?Past Projects:The JUST AI Network at the Ada Lovelace Institute, with support from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) - an independent network of researchers and practitioners committed to understanding the social and ethical value of data-driven technologies, AI, and automated systems. The network created impact on the AI research and funding landscape by bringing new voices and new concerns (including environmental sustainability) into policy discussion. Completed 2023. Documented at https://just-ai.net.Undoing Optimization - with Yale University Press. Buy here: https://yalebooks.co.uk/book/9780300223804/Virt-EU study of technology for good startups in the Internet of Things Space. Completed 2020. Documented at https://virteuproject.eu. Open access paper: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/20539517221113774 Understanding Automated Decisions - with Projects By If (https://projectsbyif.com). How should we govern the algorithms that make decisions like, for example, the cost of insurance premiums? Under what circumstances could we make these decisions transparent, and what would the implications be of doing this? Completed 2019.
