I coordinate ethnographic and policy research work to understand ethical issues in the development of IoT technologies within the London/UK space.

I conduct research on the influence of bottom-up innovation on telecommunications policy. I have expertise in researching the social impact of broadband communication networks, and have worked with non profits, municipalities, and government agencies to better understand the impact of communications technologies. My current research focuses on understanding the hybrid organizations that can support new types of networks.

Created an inventory of federal, regional, provincial and other funding programs that have supported broadband development in First Nations communities. Related the development of these programs to an infrastructure life cycle.

Provided research tools and protocols to assist in measuring the social and economic impact of community broadband projects in the United States and overseas. Drafted research report directed at DC decision-makers.

Developed preliminary topologies to present the relationships between local economic and social capacity, financing, and technology choices in local broadband networks.

Conducted interviews and ethnographic observations of community Wi-Fi networks in Fredericton NB and Montreal QC. Drafted research reports, authored peer-reviewed publications and delivered presentations.

Conducted two-year participatory ethnography as part of national research project. Authored publications directed at different research audiences in addition to two peer-reviewed articles and several presentations.

Investigated the communicative practices of Montreal community groups engaged in technical development, using observational and interview methods. Drafted research reports, wrote a book chapter, and delivered several conference presentations.

Designed and delivered a course focused on the structure and function of media institutions including new media, and on critical readings of these institutions and their products. Responsible for developing course outline and instructing lecture course of 65 students, including all evaluation.

Developed a methodological framework for conceptualizing internet access within a communicative ecology, and conducted observations, interviews and site surveys of public internet access points in an inner-city community. Authored a peer-reviewed journal article.SUPERVISORY
