I work with LHH Knightsbridge to provide career transition services. My current assignment is to provide consultation at a remote northern mine to the employees as they prepare for closure and plan for their next career opportunities. Prior, I worked with international students at Royal Roads University as they prepared for internships and new career paths in Canada. For 25 years I worked in Canada’s north in Dene and Inuit communities in the fields of adult education (Aurora College) and training (NITC), Originally from Manitoba, my curiosity and interest in people and culture has continued to guide me towards diversity and inclusion as the primary themes of my work. An avid lifelong learner, I completed my MA, BA, and adult education certification on a contextual learning journey through the interdisciplinary intersection of economics, career development, remote and northern community, utilizing adult learning and teaching models. In northern communities I worked as a trainer, educator and career advisor for land claims organizations, territorial programs, and the communities – and I continue to stay connected by teaching adult education courses online to northern students. My role at Royal Roads University included career coaching to students and alumni, in addition to supporting students in their internship and practicum searches. As an Adult Educator, my teaching philosophy promotes a student-centered approach which allows for self-construction of knowledge along avenues that are personal, relevant and practical. Learning experiences should be authentic, challenging, engaging and collaborative: to allow for deeper distribution of cognition, where new learning contributes to the self, the community and to the learning of others. The content of learning is important, but more so is gaining conceptualization on how we learn, in order that we may continually improve our approach to problems and projects. This concept of how we learn is the transferable outcome that builds resiliency in being flexible and adaptable in the ever-changing societal and environmental contexts.
