Any concept can be taught to any learner. This is my mantra as an instructional designer, an education coordinator, and as a teacher in the classroom. The human brain is inspiring and overwhelming. I love figuring how to get it to learn what we need it to (tricky because it usually has a mind of its own!). I especially enjoy conveying difficult or abstract concepts and ideas to learners unfamiliar with the content. My two favorite ways to accomplish that feat? Storytelling and metaphor. Of course, we all know that application of knowledge is really where it's at, so I provide plenty of opportunities for learners to practice, practice, practice. Call it interactive, call it engaging, or call it plain old-fashioned common sense; it's a critical part of effective instruction. Lastly, I'm a fan of assessment. Not so much the kind that is a multiple-choice regurgitation of facts and figures. More like the kind that helps me understand the learner so I can deliver instruction that's relevant, responsive, and reliable and so the learner can gain an understanding of her own position with regard to the content and skills.
