I am a partner in the Manchester office of global law firm Kennedys specialising in financial disputes and all aspects of employment law. Having trained as a solicitor at berg law firm, qualifying in 1992, I continued my career with the firm being appointed partner in 1997 and Managing Partner in 2007 before moving to the position of Chief Executive in early 2016. In 2017 berg merged with Kennedys to offer clients significantly enhanced commecial litigation and commercial services.

After eight years as Managing Partner of berg, I took up the role of Chief Executive in order to focus more on the overall strategy and growth of the firm. Following Richard Clark’s appointment as the firms first Managing Director in January 2016, I’m keen to continue the development of berg as a leading professional services firm through organic growth and strategic changes, whilst still keeping hold of what really sets us apart from other firms for our clients. 26 years after starting my career with berg as a trainee, I’m still passionate about seeing the progression of new recruits from work experience students to fully qualified lawyers "at the top of their game”. It’s motivating to see others on the same path that I was on; building their career with a firm they are passionate about.

In my role as Managing Partner, I worked hard to transform berg into a firm that was ready to grow to meet the increasingly complex needs of our clients. After I introduced a corporate structure to our financial and operational management, I created new roles for key team members including a Commercial Director, Finance Director and a Business Development & Marketing team to allow berg to respond quickly to an increasingly challenging legal services market. My interest in banking and financial litigation developed when, following the financial crisis, it became clear that banks had not only acted unethically but had broken the law in many cases. In 2013, 2014 and 2015 I worked on the berg Banking Reports, submissions to the Treasury Select Committee and various independent investigations to champion these complex issues nationally, to the benefit of individuals and businesses. Having worked to hold these financial institutions to account, I have been featured in national press and media including BBC Breakfast, BBC 5 Live, The Times and Panorama. This work has led to a developing interest in refinancing generally, and alternative sources of finance, such as crowd funding, peer to peer lending and invoice discounting; all real alternatives to traditional banking.It has also made me look again at the role of incentives and bonuses in the workplace and the behaviour that they drive. In the case of the banking scandals, it’s clearly the wrong behaviour!

After five years as a solicitor with the firm, I became Partner in 1997. My experience as a commercial litigator drew me into the world of board and shareholder disputes. This involved looking at things from the perspective of employer, director or shareholder. This inspired me to set up berg's HR and Employment team, which has been nationally recognised for its expertise.
