I work in the human rights department at Leigh Day. I specialise in human rights law and am also an experienced clinical negligence lawyer.I specialise in education law, in particular cases concerning children and young people with special educational needs and disability discrimination. I regularly act for clients in the First-tier Tribunal and Upper Tribunal.I also have expertise in claims for discrimination arising out of the provision of goods and services. I am currently representing a small group of disabled people who are bringing an action against a leading retailer of sports goods. I have also been involved in advancing the rights of other protected groups, and helped a same sex couple obtain a parental order conferring parental responsibility upon them in respect of their twin children born following an international surrogacy agreement.I act in cases involving access to health care and medical ethics. I am currently representing the family of a woman in PVS in an application to the Court of Protection to withdraw life-sustaining treatment. I have acted for individuals who have been abused or neglected in care, and am currently acting for a number of people who were treated at the private Hospital, Winterbourne View, which was recently closed following an expose by BBC Panorama of systemic abuse of patients. I have considerable experience of assisting families through the inquest process. I have negotiated settlements under the Human Rights Act where an individual has died in circumstances where there has been a potential violation in European Convention rights, including individuals who were detained in psychiatric units. I also have considerable expertise of community care law. I have assisted charities and voluntary organisations including BDF Newlife, Beatbullying, Maternity Action and the Society for Mucopolysaccharide Diseases.
