Sigma Offshore was a floating production turret mooring technology play coupled with marine engineering consultancy services. I joined the business on the back of venture capital funding as CEO with a remit to secure technology patents, take it to the Floating Production market and grow internationally. After two years National Oilwell Varco acquired a stake in the business and in April 2014 NOV acquired all the firms Intellectual Property and exited the business. The Sigma trading business was sold in late 2014. During the Sigma journey a highly successful engineering consultancy subsidiary was formed (ClerkMaxwell Ltd) and subsequently sold to a UK plc (Costain Group).

Costain Group plc acquired ClerkMaxwell in 2011 and my Chairman role transitioned into this position. EPC Offshore was then acquired in 2013 and the two business were combined to form the new brand, Costain Upstream, in February 2014. I formally exited the business in November 2014 after a successful transition to the new owners.

ClerkMaxwell was founded in 2008 as a wholly owned subsidiary of Sigma Offshore Ltd. I held the position of Group CEO and was responsible and accountable for delivering the business performance for the then two main shareholders, Energy Ventures A/S and Scottish Enterprise (now Scottish Investment Bank). ClerkMaxwell was bought out of the Group through a friendly MBO and, as part of the MBO buyers group, I moved to become Chairman on a part time basis.

Xodus Group was founded in 2005 as a “Plan B” following the rejection of a proposed management buyout of Genesis Oil & Gas Consultants from owner Technip lead by me and a team of senior management from Genesis. The new business was funded during its start up year by me and 3 fellow directors along with a single private investor and a RBS bank loan facility. I successfully exited the business following the establishment of the Australian subsidiary in 2007 and the acquisition of Aurora Environmental Ltd.
