Alistair is a practical strategic thinker, combining a strong ability to match the ideal opportunity to the reality of a situation. With a dynamic approach to execution, he converts strategy into tangible action and delivery. In his last role before retirement in December 2019 Alistair covered the in-organic execution and delivery of HSBC Group’s global strategy. He drove change with intensity and focus.Until mid-2011 Alistair led HSBC's Financial Institutions Group where he was at the centre of successfully navigating HSBC through the banking crisis, ensuring strong continued support for its clients yet, at the same time, being nimble-footed enough to withstand the damaging effects of the crisis. He advised both corporate clients and governments during this period. In particular he advised the Greek Government on its banking sector, the Irish State on the establishment of its "bad bank", NAMA, and was a panel adviser to Spain's Fund for Ordered Bank Restructuring. He was adviser to Global Investment House's restructuring which took Euromoney's "Most Innovative Deal" award when it became the first successful restructuring in the Middle East in 2010.Prior to banking, Alistair qualified as a Chartered Accountant, latterly specialising in tax and tax-driven strategic change events. This strong analytical and financial background, with a deep understanding of technical aspects, combined with many years of commercial experience, gives Alistair a valuable ability to extract the key business issues from the background noise.Alistair has an inner motivation to excel and leads by example. He has been a prize winner at his university, the Institute of Civil Engineering and the Institute of Chartered Accountants. He passports well across societies and has an ability to lead, motivate and deliver in diverse environments, varying geographies, cultures, professions and business sectors. He has solid experience in dealing with senior management and boards globally.Specialties: Strategic change and business management both day to day and for special projects. Advising and executing on joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions, greenfield ventures, business closures, outsourcing, insourcing, capital management, fund raisings, IPO's and balance sheet management.
