I’m in charge of financial communications at the Church of England, working with the Pensions Board and the Church Commissioners for England, who together have about GBP 14bn under management.That involves handling media enquiries, creating content, and aligning messaging among a large and diverse group of stakeholders – as well as dealing with frequent media crises.Thematically, our focus is on responsible investment, and we use our influence as one of the world’s best-known ethical investors to support the work on Net Zero, human rights, mining safety, and biodiversity.

I ran communications for Unilabs, a large clinical diagnostics group, working closely with country and functional teams across 16 countries. I handled internal and external comms, including public affairs, crisis comms, and employer branding, and was a trusted adviser to the Unilabs management team. I advised our management and medical specialists on media strategy, found them media opportunities, and trained them to face journalists.On joining, I set up an internal comms strategy via our Workplace Intranet, generating content for use by our country teams, repurposing local content for use in other UL countries, and spotlighting excellence across our network. Alongside other initiatives, I started a monthly 'Fireside Chat' that showcased team members in a relaxed and entertaining way.My remit included finding and managing external comms agencies, negotiating contracts with service providers, and mentoring talented comms people.During the pandemic, our medical specialists regularly featured on TV, speaking about testing, vaccination policies, medical innovation, and the evolution of the virus. I produced a steady stream of Covid-related videos and opinion pieces for internal and external use.My focus at Unilabs was on innovation - specifically AI tools, eHealth, and telemedicine - and I worked closely with our Chief Innovation Officer to help tell those stories.Finally, I supported the successful sale of the business – raising our profile in the financial, business, and medical trade media, creating positive coverage, and taking advantage of opportunities to bolster our standing.

At Carlson Wagonlit Travel, one of the top three business travel companies, I ran all media relations, world-wide.With my team in London, Minneapolis, Madrid, and Singapore – as well as country teams all around the world – I worked to get the CWT into the news. That involved generating stories by crunching our data, talking to people, and coming up with story angles – then finding media opportunities, training up spokespeople, and networking with the world's travel, technology, and business media.Our focus was broad, ranging from light “life-style” stories to in-depth position statements on payment technology and regulation, and the airlines’ shift towards Direct Connect distribution models.

CNC is the strategic comms arm of the Publicis Group.I worked on a wide variety of mandates across Europe – technology, intellectual property, real estate, litigation, crisis, and public affairs.In Frankfurt, I led German communications for Merrill Lynch and The Economist. Using my media contacts, I advised on a string of high-value acquisitions, restructurings, and insolvencies, including on Infineon, Schieder, Treofan, ProSiebenSat1, Terex, and Rodenstock, and I supported turnaround specialist Alvarez & Marsal with their portfolio companies.In 2012, I was tasked with producing the first-ever annual report for the Vatican Bank. This involved coordinating input, writing the copy, checking the Italian translation, and securing all approvals – including the pope’s.As CNC’s media specialist, I conducted regular media and crisis trainings for our clients’ senior management: Vatican Bank, Zalando, Sodexo, HomeAway, Generali, and Bombardier.

Mergermarket is a global financial newswire formerly owned by the FT Group. It specialised initially on delivering market-sensitive M&A news, before moving into complementary areas. I worked on all three products, starting off on Mergermarket itself, before moving to Debtwire, which focuses on high–yield and restructuring situations. There I was responsible for coverage on Italian, German, Swiss and Austrian situations. Working my contacts at hedge funds, banks, advisers, and trade unions, I broke some of Debtwire's biggest stories – we were the first to report Parmalat’s extensive use of credit default swaps, and to accurately estimate its debt. Finally, I became dealReporter’s News Editor. As well as writing my own stories, I edited my team’s copy, and mentored talented juniors.

Whatsonwhen was a global leisure and business content provider, now incorporated into Google. I was responsible for the entire editorial process, as well as looking after clients, including Reuters, Omnitel-Vodafone and Credit Suisse Private Banking.

Together with friends, I set up this demand aggregation start-up for small businesses.

Cutting my teeth in financial journalism during the 1997 Asian crisis, I was the ranking reporter in the Jakarta office from mid-1998 onwards.That involved setting news priorities, directing stringers across Indonesia, translating stringer copy, and recording pieces for TV and radio, as well as networking with Indonesia’s political and business elite.We covered Indonesia’s economic collapse, and the ouster of Suharto – breaking the news of his resignation before all other newswires, thanks to a “palace source.” Other big stories included East Timor’s independence and Indonesia’s transition to democracy.In 1999, using senior government sources, I implicated the Minister of State Enterprises in the Bank Bali scandal – a front-page story in the Herald Tribune. During my time in Jakarta, I wrote for Asiaweek, Germany's Stern magazine, and the Jakarta Post, where I also worked as a sub-editor.
