Let's just say I have been practising law for long enough (just) to have advised clients on Millennium Bug issues (Google it if you are under 30).I am a commercial real estate lawyer, and have been all of my career, with stints at two top tier Australian law firms (one as a partner) and various roles (including as NZ General Counsel) for a global property institution. Starting in Brisbane, I moved through Sydney, Hong Kong and sunny Auckland, before finally returning to Brisbane. These experiences have given me a very well-rounded view of commercial real estate and the law relating to it.I love things that are well made and well designed, or things that just work. I have chased that in my legal career but found an industry not built to seek improvement or efficiency, but instead with an emphasis on the status quo. The application of technology to the law has always interested me, and I have proposed, designed and implemented various tools for law in my time, but the recent rapid and phenomenal improvement and accessibility in technology with potential legal application changes things dramatically. After trying to lead development of solutions from within a big law firm, it became clear that the vanguard of change will not be found there. This has led me to establish Field.Field is focused on 'quantifying law', which taps into a key flaw in legal process - its output is not sufficiently aligned with the data driven, numeric world in which business operates. Or, if you prefer, law doesn't speak the same language as business. It is a broad challenge, which I am starting with a reinvention of lease due diligence process.When not changing the (legal) world, I chase my two energetic sons (it's never ending); seek to find 2 minutes to speak to my wife without interruption; try to keep fit; immerse myself in non-fiction; drink too much coffee; and probably spend too much money on shoes.
