About Ali Stewart
I love language – English, Spanish, Catalan, French and Italian! I’m an editor, writer and creative professional with a proven commercial track record and a strong work ethic. Over the past 25+ years I’ve driven the concept, creation and delivery of print and digital assets that have won national and in-house awards for a broad range of employers and clients. A former senior manager, launch editor and editor at a large magazine publisher in the UK, as a consultant my strength is that I work with a small customer base, offering a personal, dedicated service that delivers an intense concentration on each product and its individual requirements. I listen to what you need and translate it into ideas, words and design that inform, enthuse and build connections. My skills are adaptable, too. My ear for language tone and flow enables me to successfully 'humanise' AI-generated copy and content where personality can sometimes be lacking, putting back the human touch.I look to build a close working relationship with professional companies and organisations, including local authorities and charities, who want to engage with their customers, employees and stakeholders. How can I support you in your work?Experience and expertise: · Writing, creating content and editing on subjects including: conservation, heritage and agriculture; employee, HR and pension issues; strategy; cycling – road and MTBing; extreme sports; travel and living abroad – particularly Spain; complete document management – including off site storage, digitisation and heritage storage; data shredding; GDPR/DPA (2018); environmental issues; ITAD/ITAM· Project management · Corporate communications· International publishing and development · Academic book editing and manuscript preparation · Fluency in European languages

Clients, past and present· The National Trust – since 2005· Royal Artillery Centre for Personal Development · Wiltshire Council · Ordnance Survey· Restore Document Management – since 2008· Defra· Environment Agency· Play Sports Network· University of Exeter· Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona· Universitat de Girona· Universidad de La Coruña· Universidad de HuelvaWriter, editor, creative force, English language expert – as a publishing and communications specialist I run, or have run, a number of regular print and online publications over the past decade for the likes of the National Trust (UK), Ordnance Survey, Royal Artillery (British Army), and Wiltshire Council (UK). For a diverse range of corporate clients, including office services experts, Restore Document Management and a number of agencies and SME, I have created the concepts for, written and produced websites, museum panels and interpretation, ad campaigns, suites of print and online collateral and banks of detailed case studies. I build and maintain close team working with my clients. In my 12-year association with the National Trust, for instance, I have filled a number of roles. First, as their long-standing staff magazine editor, working with my design partner, as an extension of the internal comms team. Over the years, we also re-designed their supporters' regional newsletter, created and produced a magazine for the NT's tenant farmers – including a Welsh version – and set up and produced their pensions newsletter. I have completed numerous one-off booklets and print projects for them, too. During the four years I've recently spent living and working in Girona, north east Spain (2011-2015), I was involved with Spanish academics, providing accredited English language expertise in areas such as translation and editing services for articles, dissertations, presentations and whole books. I was also an examination invigilator for the Cambridge English exam programme throughout the year.
Group Editor
I was a valued member of the senior management team at overseas lifestyle publisher, Merricks Media. My role’s responsibilities involved strategic planning, commercial and operational development and the launch of a series of bookazines and books plus two monthly magazines in six months. I doubled the size of the editorial team, recruiting to take it up to 30 along with subsequent people management and training – from standard setting for sub editors to high-level editorial and operational direction.
International Development Manager
I was responsible for client relationship development through the commissioning, writing and production of publications, tools and events designed to keep clients ‘close’ while helping them maintain Future’s high standards in their own licensed/exported editions. Projects included the project management and launch (May 2003) of an online content delivery system we called FELIX. I wrote and commissioned the new design of all Future Publishing’s marketing and development collateral for the two most successful licensing and export teams in UK magazine publishing at the time; developed conference content and materials with creative directors across the business, delivered workshops on editorial craft to our international licensees; wrote and produced 120-page+ portfolio brochures; commissioned and produced client liaison and development guides and HTML newsletters.
Assistant Publisher, International Development
My role was to explore commercial and development opportunities across the newly forming PLC. I published a local language computer games title into The Netherlands and was responsible for elements of the start-up and operational development for The Future Network in their European businesses. As well as personally overseeing publishing systems and set-ups, such as a Europe-wide tour of six offices to evangelise about Adobe’s new Creative Suite and the benefits of the whole network using the same software. I also ran an overseas development task force of senior editors and designers who travelled Europe sharing Future magazine craft and knowledge.
Launch Editor
One of my favourite projects was to launch one of the UK’s first extreme lifestyle/sports titles, No Limits World, which we produced under licence from Italy, one of whose results was a regular extreme sport column in The Sunday Times. I, and my dynamic duo art editor buddy, went on to launch-edit a number of specialist titles, including the first DVD magazine on the UK market – What DVD? – a dirt cycling title and a couple of special T3 one-off editions.
Deputy Editor
The role of Deputy Editor on this title carried extra weight as the editor worked remotely. Close management of a young team was crucial for meeting deadlines and creating team spirit. During my time on the magazine, monthly circulation went from 48k to 62k.
Not Only, But Also…
Before moving to Bath to join Future Publishing’s Cycling Plus magazine as Production Editor in 1993, I worked at Northern & Shell as one of the production managers, including on the launch of OK! Magazine; in the production department at a small ad agency in London’s West End, and at a printing firm in Kent. Prior to joining the creative industry, from 1986–89 I had worked in Spain as a TEFL-qualified English teacher. I spent one year at The English Centre in Ibiza, followed by two years at Paidos SA in Madrid. The second of those years I was Head of School, managing staff, students and teaching materials, as well as maintaining 15–20 contact hours of teaching each week.
