I am a consultant. That means different things to different people but to me, it means I solve problems. What sort of problems? Well here are a few examples:I solve communications challenges. A client of mine was struggling to explain their new health plan to their workforce of drivers, maintenance and other support staff. Among the communications tools, I created a cartoon character the employees could relate to and devised various strips illustrating how the plan features worked. I solve process problems. A client had an inefficient new hire orientation process. The new hires were inundated with paper forms, bored to tears by endless presentations, stuck in long lines to meet with HR personnel, and just trapped there for hours. I led the client through a "brown paper" process mapping to document when, where and by whom all those paper forms were being used. We eliminated the duplicate work, added a computer lab session to reduce one-one-one sessions and paperwork, and streamlined the presentations. New hire drudgery was gone. The day became one to reinforce the new hire's decision to work for this great, efficient and fun organization.I solve technology troubles. I help clients implement software to streamline their HR departments. For instance, I program benefits business rules into the benefits management platform, customize and imbed employee education, and do whatever Excel data conversions are needed to import data, set up carrier feeds and execute uploads to legacy payroll systems.I became a consultant because being just a communications expert or just a technology person felt too confining. There is never a shortage of problems out there and as a consultant, I can use all my skills and experience to help solve them.
