The Philadelphia Center is a non-profit organization serving persons with HIV/AIDS and working reduce the spread of HIV, and advocating for the rights of persons who are infected with HIV. In 1994, when I began working with them, all staff members other than myself were from the LGBT community, there was very little support for the cause from the straight community in NW Louisiana, and very few relationships with other area organizations. When I left a year and a half later we had developed significant partnerships in the mainstream community, increased our volunteer pool by more than 33%, and doubled our fundraising revenue.VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENTTraining and supervision of more than 200 volunteers while increasing the volunteer base by more than 33%. DEVELOPING NEW PARTNERSHIPSBuilt alliances with more than a dozen area civic groups, synagogues, congregations, other non-profit groups and individual philanthropists in order to dispel myths and stereotypes surrounding HIV while increasing financial and volunteer support. COMMUNICATIONSWorked with local news teams and news papers to advocate for HIV prevention, dispel fear and bias surrounding the disease, and garner support to meet the needs of those who were HIV+ and/or living with AIDS. Made regular appearances as a guest on local television and radio broadcasts. Raised our professional image in the community by redesigning the monthly newsletter and utilizing cost-effective high-level printing: allowing us to better promote advocacy, celebrate achievements, educate for HIV prevention, increase donor support, and attract volunteers for our mission. PROJECT MANAGEMENT: Recruited and managed teams of volunteers to plan and provide four major fundraising events which raised over $350,000 (a 100% increase) during a slow economy. These events required promotion, a venue, elaborate decorations, catering, publicity, live entertainment, plus the collection and display of high value items for auction.
