My current position as a classroom teacher has allowed me to develop invaluable skills such as leadership, teamwork, communication, critical and imaginative thinking and organisation. Not only do I plan, instruct and build encouraging relationships with children, but I also lead a team of teaching assistants, working closely with my colleagues and communicating regularly with parents. This has been particularly invaluable when, during the pandemic, teaching went from in the classrooms and in-person to online. I adapted and overcame many difficulties during this time and was able to keep in contact with my pupils, their families and the school or remotely. I continued to deliver lessons, creating engaging resources which allowed children to continue their progress. I also rang parents regularly to support them and their needs as well as set up online sessions where the children could interact with each other in a safe setting.Working with the wider school community has seen me run drama clubs, rounders and support at multiple fundraising events. I also work as the Arts Subject Lead, supporting, monitoring and instilling what Art and Drama look like across the school.

As a trainee teacher, I was accepted to train with St. Nicolas Primary School where I had been working as a TA. Although I had worked at this school previously, my new role was vastly different. Here, I worked with multiple year groups covering a wide range of topics which improved my subject knowledge greatly. I planned, instructed and reflected on each lesson, learning and improving from each one. I worked alongside multiple year groups and their teams, which included collaborating with colleagues and effectively deploying TAs to dynamically react to the needs of the different children in the classroom.I also worked with a number of other schools including Bayards Hill Primary School, Headington and specialist schools such as Bardwell School, Bicester.I also engaged in regular training and courses which I instilled into my practice in my day-to-day role.

After a year of working as a teaching assistant, I decided, with the encouragement of my colleagues, to become a class teacher. So as I worked as a full-time TA also I completed my Open University degree continuing to build my skill set as I studied. In this role, I assisted the education of children I worked with in a number of ways. I started my work day running breakfast club. Not only did this include preparing and serving breakfasts but also organising a range of activities for children once they had finished. I would work as a general class TA in the mornings, taking half the class for focussed learning of Maths and English. In the afternoons, I would carry out a range of interventions including consolidating core subjects as well as supporting children’s mental health and wellbeing in 1:1 sessions. As a member of the wider school community, I also helped to support other year groups in residential trips, leading small groups and building strong relationships with children in a short amount of time.
