I’m an associate professor in the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies, and the Department of English Language and Literature, at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. I am also Director of the U-M Global Islamic Studies Center (GISC), where I direct programming, do fundraising, and manage finances, diversity, equity, and inclusion consulting, and community outreach. My book “Far from Mecca: Globalizing the Muslim Caribbean" (Rutgers University Press 2020, University of the West Indies Press 2021) is the first academic monograph on the literature, history, and music of enslaved African and indentured Indian Muslims in the Caribbean."Far from Mecca" received honorable mention in the 2021 Modern Language Association Prize for a First Book, and awards from the American Comparative Literature Association and American Association of University Women (AAUW). My public interviews on the Caribbean, Islam, and Muslims have been featured on NPR, Chicago’s Radio Islam, the Washington Post, Religion News, American Muslim Today, Sapelo Square/The Maydan, Strictly Facts: A Guide to Caribbean History & Culture Podcast, the Polis Project, the New Books Network, and The Black Agenda Report.
