I am an award-winning chef with extensive experience in the food industry, a culinary consultant,and author of 15 food guides and cookbooks. Many call me a "renaissance woman" because my credits include stints as a newspaper food columnist, magazine columnist, television food stylist, cookbook author, culinary tour leader, product spokesperson, culinary teacher, and consultant to a long list of restaurants and food companies. My latest books include The Magic of Spice Blends and Making Artisan Pasta (also published in the UK), The Butcher's Apprentice, and The Soupmaker's Kitchen, (For descriptions of my other books, please see the Publications section.) I have strong expertise in Italian cuisine, which I cooked professionally for many years. In order to improve my skills, I studied the Italian language and travel to Italy often (though never often enough!). I will be leading a fantastic small-group culinary tour to Puglia, which I call "land of 1,000-year-old olive trees, in October 2013. I love teaching and learning about food through personal experience, meeting and talking to cooks and food producers, and culinary travel. I am an excellent and knowledgeable teacher, lecturer, and television personality specializing in explaining how to buy and use all sorts of ingredients like produce, fish,meat, pasta, legumes, and herbs & spices. Most important of all, I enjoy a challenge!
