Hans Merensky Holdings (HMH) is an integrated group, managing the entire value chain – from seedling trees to the delivery of products to the market. HMH was established 70 years ago, with its headquarters located in Parktown, Johannesburg, in South Africa. A privately-held company, its shareholders include the Hans Merensky Foundation, the South African state-owned Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), International Finance Corporation (IFC), Vuka Forestry Holdings (Pty) Limited, Women Investment Portfolio Holdings (Pty) Limited and HMH staff.HMH is the holding vehicle for the list of shareholders mentioned in the Westfalia Fruit Group. I was appointed to oversee this investment after the unbundling of Merensky Timber from HMH. Certain farming assets which are currently part of the South African Government Land Claims and restitution process are held in this business and I was also responsible for overseeing this process. Through its oat milling operation, flaking technology, and extruded expertise, it is supplying markets in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, the Far East, and Asia.I was brought in by the Jordan family to significantly improve the business and create a business with much-improved efficiency, productivity, and customer service, add innovation, and achieve much stronger financial results. Notable achievements include a total modernization of the milling operation, improving efficiencies and yield, increasing capacity, enhancing customer relationships, expanding the sales base in various key export markets, creating a brand new and modern flaking, and extruded cereal division, expanding into oat feed pellets and pellets for the biomass market, and significantly improving the financial results. I also oversaw the sale of the business to Richardson International of Canada and stayed on to ensure a solid integration of this business into Richardson International.www.richardson.ca

Pioneer Foods ( recently sold to PepsiCo) is the second largest food and beverage company in South Africa and one of the largest in Africa. The company is growing its focus in Africa and also has a substantial presence in the UK. My role was to look after the Group’s presence outside South Africa including an operational responsibility for the UK operations. It included focus on vertical synergy’s between divisions exports and researching opportunities for M&A action especially in Africa. Active projects in Nigeria , Rwanda and Zambia were entertained. Working streams in a matrix manner were implemented and my skills for growth , M&A and cross functional transformation was very needed in the role.

This was my first role based outside South Africa and I headed up a joint venture between Pioneer Foods and Sanitarium Health Foods of Australia. The JV manufacturer private label breakfast cereals for retailers. In 2003 bought out the share of Sanitarium and we rapidly grew the company both organically and through M&A. I overseen the M&A of both Deva Mills and Belso Cereals. Focus was very much on both growth and operational efficiencies. I personally overseen the relationships with key retailers including M&S ,Tesco, Lidl , Aldi , Morrison’s , Sainsbury’s , Safeway, Somerfield, Bidvest and key B2B and contract packing relationships. The company was well known for its new product development skills and innovation.
