I worked internationally as a researcher, teacher and consultant and have extensive experience with project management and coordination, writing, qualitative research, teaching in higher education, and the organisation and execution of various projects, events, and excursions.Originally from the Netherlands, I am currently based in Cairo, Egypt and work remotely for the Heritage Commission in the Ministry of Culture in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on the implementation of UNESCO's World Heritage Convention.Previously, I worked as an academic in the interdisciplinary area of critical heritage studies: my PhD (2017, Deakin University) was about the role of human rights in UNESCO's World Heritage programme (case study: Bagan in Myanmar) and I taught BA and MA programmes related to cultural heritage, anthropology, and urban studies at universities in Australia, the UK, and Egypt.

Doctoral ResearcherDeakin University Feb 2013 - Oct 2017Melbourne, AustraliaPhD title: World Heritage and human rights in Bagan, MyanmarMy PhD was about the intersection between cultural heritage conservation and human rights. It was an interdisciplinary project, drawing on on history, anthropology, sociology, international law and political science.More details:It was concerned with the extent to which engagement with human rights can help to reconcile the often different agendas of conservation, religion, and development at the historic site Bagan in Myanmar, for which a World Heritage nomination was being prepared and many rights were at stake. For example, development, land and economic rights risk being undermined when heritage designation restricts where and what people can build and where and how they can run their businesses, while religious and cultural rights are at stake when the conservation and protection of ancient monuments excludes people from their religious practices.Using qualitative research methods – including documentation analysis, interviews and observation – I investigated the challenges and opportunities of implementing rights-based policies on the ground. Accordingly, this research project involved extensive interaction with people from communities in the field – including residents of Bagan, heritage organisations in Yangon, activists and bureaucrats in Bangkok, and international World Heritage consultants. Six months of fieldwork in Myanmar allowed me to closely observe and analyse the (dis)connections between theory, policy and practice when it comes to cultural heritage and human rights. The results of this research have been published in several international peer-reviewed journals and I actively made use of opportunities to communicate my research and expand my network through presentations at (international) conferences. In addition, I was a finalist for the 3-Minute Thesis Competition of Deakin University (2015). -
