I am happiest when selling the premium product or service. It gives me something to sell rather than having an 'also ran' or something where the only response is price. If the product is technical in nature - great! By technical I mean having some expertise attached, for example some retaining walls are technical as are some adhesives or fasteners - you have to give the client the right advice.It is not always about selling, sometimes it is about finding out where it all went wrong. Analysis, sometimes forensically examining seemingly desperate pieces of information to establish what the situation should have been and how that departs from the reality is often just as important as it leads to optimising client outcomes. Optimised client outcomes mean better, trustful relationships.Doing the right thing by the client is also important. I once had a client who had her heart set on local sandstone around her salt water pool. I converted her to $3000 worth of high quality wet cast pavers rather than $5000 of sandstone. Why? The sandstone would have degraded and 'fretted', I saved her about $10000 worth of heartache. The difference is that everywhere else they were happy to take the order and let her suffer. No one had asked the question about the type of chlorination in the pool.That's my style.
