Alla worked on a team that specializes in Power Protection schemes consisting of programming and testing Relays and Real Time Automated Controllers (RTACs), determining connection diagrams for physical and communication devices, implementing and troubleshooting the design on site and remotely, and accurately capturing the changes for projects requiring retro-fits. As an Engineering Intern, Alla partners with Design Engineers to assist with the development and execution of substation-related projects such as retrofits, relay testing, and RTAC communication. She worked with mentors to develop an automated testing process for relays. She is also learning to automate relay testing through Test Universe by learning how to use the software and translating the manual settings to tests that are preset with values to make the testing process more efficient. She also used AutoCAD to review designs and verify accuracy of drawings. Most of the time, Alla is learning how to create drawings, and interpret relay settings.

Alla worked part time as an Art Teacher at House of Bread Christian Academy. Once a week, she taught students in grades TK-8th a new art concept and we created a new project. Throughout the day, she was responsible for about 15 students at any given time. Inside the classroom, Alla introduced concepts and walked the students through them at a pace appropriate for their age. She placed emphasis on trying your best and walking out of class with a completed project, over perfection. She taught on seven topics like watercolor, proportions, sculpting, and pastels. The students completed a final project at the end of each semester. When Alla was not in the classroom, she was researching, gathering materials and preparing new projects to teach. Because she had a large range of ages to teach, Alla had to prepare concepts that can be taught to each of the grades thoroughly. Also, she was accountable for the budget for art class throughout the semester, and met with the principal weekly to approve expenses.

The name of the specific program Alla worked for is PAL (Peer Assisted Learning), and it is a program at CSU Sacramento that allows students to facilitate supplementary classes of about 5-15 students in subjects the facilitators understand. The purpose is to reinforce material and encourage the students to apply themselves fully. We believe that students who take our classes walk away with a deeper understanding of the material their classes cover because we take time to walk through worksheets with them. Alla has facilitated two physics classes, and had seen students overcome obstacles in their learning. Besides facilitating a class, as PAL facilitators, we are responsible for creating, researching and carrying out a Research Project. This project pertains to the students learning and academic growth. Alla's group was interested in the atmosphere created by people who needed extra time outside of class and individual study to better understand concepts. Finding it was often competitive and unwelcoming, we implemented 5-10 minute games that would break the tension in the room at the beginning of the hour. Also, along with facilitating a class, the facilitators attend lecture and hold office hours to ensure we are a effective resource to our students.
