After a college career studying various engineering and CS technical realms, and later mixed with music education courses, I eventually landed in the world of database management. My career began as a programmer/analyst at the University of CT, reporting off databases on our shared mainframe. Once I made my way to Boston and began work at Partners HealthCare, I became immersed in the role of Database Administrator in support of clinical infrastructure.2007 saw a change in scenery with a shift to a DBA role in Research Computing. I was excited to broaden my exposure and see the IT world through the lens of a researcher. The flexible, agile and less durable needs of the research community was a radical departure from the standardized, critically robust infrastructure where I cut my teeth. I put effort into becoming a more well rounded DBA by adding skillsets in PostgreSQL, GreenplumDB and MySQL, plus beginning to understand emerging NoSQL options such as document stores, key-value stores and other non-relational technologies. This fit nicely along with the 10 years I had worked with Oracle DB and MS SQL Server.In 2012, I adopted the role of cloud architect within the same Research Computing group to fill a void left from the departure of our best systems architect at the time. The role began chiefly as a lynchpin for our team of already well rounded infrastructure engineers, plus adopting a number of SAN related tasks that were left unattended. In the past year, I've finally begun to grow into more of a true cloud architect. I've gotten experience with designing private and public cloud environments both on-prem and off-prem, utilizing various XaaS approaches. Experience with AWS and Microsoft Azure, plus on-prem work with OpenStack have been very professionally satisfying.
