I joined PSL as a contractor to set up a PMO and accepted a permanent position after 2 years to join the senior management team and grow the business to sell. PSL had 50 employees, 3 project managers and no PMO when I joined, growing to 153 employees, 10 project managers and 2 PMO consultants when sold.Below are some of the key changes I introduced to support PSL’s growth and financial success. Ensure and demonstrate we are in control: - Dashboard reporting -- Introduction of status dashboard reporting for each engagement type -- Weekly review and summary update of all dashboard- ‘Turn it green’ -- Ensure documented recovery plan is in place for any overall red project- Risk and issue managementSupport financial targets:- Revenue forecasting and tracking to ensure revenue targets will be met- Non-charge forecasting and tracking to control non-charge work - Investment committed to approve and monitor internal investment (e.g. research and development, X-client improvements)Support growth:- Provide visibility of pipeline- Capture expected future demand and recommend team structures to support this- Resource and capacity planningPeople management:- Line manager for 10 project managers and 2 PMO consultants- Objective setting and performance management - Recruitment- Mentoring and support- Creation of project management competencies and development plansBeing a small company, I was able to very hands-on in supporting the business. Examples include acting as bid manager for new bids, documenting presenting the implementation approach to prospective clients, providing bid assurance, a key client turnaround, and acting as project manager for PSL's two largest implementations (Atom Bank and Pepper Ireland). I also introduced a ‘gap analysis approach’ to support PSL’s move to a product model, reducing effort required to bring on new clients and ensure implementation scope is documented and tightly controlled.
