Allan Sinclair was born in and educated in Johannesburg. After completing his national service in 1987, he volunteered to work part time at, what was then known as, the South African National Museum of Military History. The work interested him so much that he secured a permanent appointment as a trainee curator. During this time, he completed a BA Degree in History and Political Science at UNICA whilst training as a curator and working with the Military Art and Uniforms collections. In 1996 he was appointed Curator of the Military Art, Prisoner-of-War and Propaganda Collections and registered for a BA Honours Degree, again at UNISA, which he completed in 2005. In addition to the collections mentioned previously, Allan was given control of the Aviation collection. In later years, he also took on the Public Relations portfolio, looking after the Museum’s various stakeholders organisations and was appointed Acting Director of the Museum for six months in 2011. In 2012 he was awarded a Commendation by the Chief of the SANDF in Recognition of Commendable Service for work carried out at the Delville Wood Commemorative Museum in France. He is currently in charge of the Curatorial Department at the Museum.Allan has published a number of articles and presented papers on different aspects of the Museum collections and our country’s military history in general. He is also a member of the SA Legion of Military Veterans, a Trustee of the Rand Regiments Memorial and a keen sportsman who plays bowls in his spare time.
