Lead Process Engineer - Water Solutions Development

Brisbane, Australia

Assessment, selection and pilot testing of suitable technologies and processes aimed at refining Origin's CSG produced water management for the APLNG project. The process that were piloted included:- Three aquifer injection systems, each with membrane degassing for oxygen removal; to assess the capability of the aquifers to accept treated water (one 8 ML/day system, two 2 ML/day systems, combined project value ~$10 million)- Testing of weak acid cation (WAC) ion exchange resins for the softening (calcium and magnesium removal) of RO reject, aimed at facilitating further processing (volume reduction) of this brine stream by reducing its propensity to form scale (piloted at two locations, total project value ~$5 million)- Testing of adsorbents to remove dissolved silica from RO reject, also aimed at facilitating further volume reduction (included with WAC pliot)- Testing of a Sintered Metal Filter for filtration of brine that has been stored in ponds (algae and solids removal) and comparison with the performance of polymeric hollow fibre membranes (project value ~$200k)- Testing of a novel humidification/dehumidification process for brine concentration/ZLD using low grade "waste" heat (project value ~$2 million)I lead the process design and process engineering assurance for each of these projects, typically being the RPEQ signatory for engineering documents within my discipline. These projects were carried out by a relatively small team including several graduates, whom I was also partly responsible for supervising. Together the team was responsible for all activities from specification and tendering, through procurement, contractor management, construction and installation, commissioning, operation and finally decommissioning.

Aug 2010 - Oct 2015

Senior Chemical Engineer

Bradford, United Kingdom

I worked in a team developing tools in MS Excel for the sizing of water and waste water treatment process units. The outputs of these sizing models then fed into costing models to generate a "bottom-up" cost estimate. These tools allowed rapid and highly detailed "Modern Equivalent Asset Values"(MEAV) to be determined for Aqua's water utility clients and provided greater accuracy than the traditional "top-down" estimates generated from cost curves of limited and disparate data; these new tools allowed the client water utilities to complete their Asset Management Period submissions to the UK government regulator (Ofwat) with greater clarity, accuracy and transparency thus supporting their funding applications.

Process Engineer

Ghd

Brisbane, Australia

At the height of the South East Queensland Drought (2001-2007) there was a regulatory drive to greatly reduce all forms of water consumption, with specific requirements for companies with water usage greater than 50ML/year.In this role at GHD, I conducted field based water efficiency audits and developed water (mass) balances for such commercial and industrial clients; identifying opportunities for reducing, eliminating, re-using or substituting flows and then compiling Water Efficiency Management plans with specific measures and target dates set and agreed with the client in accordance with the new regulations.I was then seconded to Origin Energy for an inland desalination (MF/RO) project - the first "large scale" (12 MLD), permanent reverse osmosis plant for the CSG industry in Queensland:Review and update of P&IDsCloseout of HAZOP study actionsCompletion of detailed design (preparation and/or peer review of design calculations, datasheets, commissioning procedures)Clients representative on site during construction to ensure engineering integrityCompletion of handover documentation

2006 - 2008 ~2 yrs

Graduate Engineer

Adelaide, Australia

As a fresh graduate I keenly progressed through a number of roles at Osmoflo, whilst learning much about the design, construction, commissioning and site installation of reverse osmosis, microfiltration, ion exchange, and other membrane filtration processes to meet customer specifications in medical, municipal and commercial/industrial applications.
