Since 1987, AL LARSON has served the people of the Village of Schaumburg, Illinois as its Mayor. He is in his 6th 4-year term and has his sights firmly set on receiving a 7th in the April, 2011 election. As Mayor, Al Larson has brought stability, clarity and visionary leadership to the community. He brings an eclectic business background to his office, having served as a shop superintendent for an engineering company, a freelance nature writer, a realtor and a quality control inspector for a heavy machine parts manufacturer. His accomplishments, affiliations, strategic partnerships and aesthetic refinements of the village landscape have unified residents and elevated Schaumburg to a showpiece community in the Chicago area. A Schaumburg resident since 1969, Mayor Larson became interested in politics in the early 1970s. He volunteered to help with and campaign for the 1973 slate. In 1974 he was appointed Chair of the Environmental Committee and a member of the Zoning Board of Appeals by Mayor Bob Atcher. From 1975-1987, he served as Trustee on the Village Board and worked alongside Mayors Ray Kessell and Herb Aigner to establish and implement village policy. After losing a re-nomination bid in 1983, he ran as an independent and became the first independent elected to the village board. When the incumbent mayor chose not to seek re-election in 1987, Larson ran against the local party candidate and won decisively. Mayor Larson has instilled a deep sense of civic pride that permeates every sector of Schaumburg. A popular and well-respected mayor, his career in office is marked by high achievement, accessibility and responsiveness to constituents.
