About Allegra Shurtliff

I love to be creative and I have a technical mind. Coming up with an idea or concept for a space, a ride or a special effect is one of my most favored challenges and I enjoy trying to work out how to actually engineer and construct it. My crew and I spend a lot of time designing new and inventive effects and experiences. Each one is a unique experience and I greatly enjoy the process of working from concept to execution. The trial and error phase of any project can be gratifying and often very humorous. I truly do enjoy my work and I make it my hobby as well. I've been in the scenic and special effects industry for 15 years and it still hasn't become boring. New technology and new ideas are always coming forward and it's amazing how far the industry has come in even a decade. I admit I have more practical experience than illustration or design experience but I have some skill with sketching and some technical illustration.I would like to improve my skill base at welding, metalworking and basic mechanical engineering. I have a number of ideas for rides and effects in the haunted house industry that I think are innovative and would be very exciting, or terrifying depending on perspective. My greatest limitation is that I lack some some practical skills that would enable me to build or develop some of my ideas. Metal frames and bases for pneumatics are something I would really like to experiment further with. If I were to give my ultimate dream a description it would be to have the opportunity to design and build, or even just work on rides for amusement parks and haunted themed attractions. Disneyland Imagineering would be a dream come true. The artistry of illusion is the core of the scenic and special effects industry. We make magic.

Allegra Shurtliff Work Experience Details
  • Castle Of Chaos Haunted Houses
    Production Manager
Castle Of Chaos Haunted Houses May 2010 - Present
I oversee all of the current and projected construction projects within our three locations. Each location operates with it's own budget and management staff but it is the responsibility of myself and my crew to maintain and operate any and all production projects within. We operate out of a central location in the Salt Lake valley. I design, with the owners, the changes and improvements projected for each location individually. I also handle the day to day operation of the Salt Lake City location including maintenance and repairs. I personally do much of the construction, scenic design and finishing for each location.
  • Laser Exhibitor Service
    Lead I & D Coordinator
Laser Exhibitor Service Jan 2006 - Present
    Greater Salt Lake City Area
I am a Lead for L.E.S. assigned to the Sherpa Adventure Gear booth for the Salt Lake City Outdoor Retailer Exhibition. I am responsible for the install and dismantle of a booth, size 30 x 40. The challenges of the booth are in the installation. It has a 12 foot height and has a relatively complicated construction. The finished product resembles a Nepalese temple. It has 6 bays of authentic prayer wheels from Nepal. I've built a number of other booths using Skyline and other systems but the Sherpa booth has always been my favorite.
  • Castle Of Chaos
    Scenic Artist
Castle Of Chaos Sep 2003 - Present
I do the finish work and set dressing for the Haunted House. Once the walls and basic construction are completed I design and finish each room. I use a variety of scenic techniques to create the set. Wallpaper and painting are the basic treatments for the first layer of a room. From there I will add finishing decorations to the room itself to complete the basic look. Trim, chair rail, doorway molding, crown molding, wainscoting etc. are all examples of a basic treatment. From there I use a number of methods and techniques to create the desired effects. I use aging and distressing, airbrushing, dry brushing, wash painting and others to create an aged or abandoned appearance depending on what the space needs to look like. I also use carved foam to create caverns, waterfalls, stone and brick. The foam is coated using various products depending on the application. I prefer to do much of this work myself but I have been training two apprentices to do the same work with me.
  • Iatse Local 99
    Apprentice Stagehand
    Iatse Local 99 Jul 2002 - Jun 2004
I was called to work on various shows ranging from concerts at large arena venues to Broadway productions at professional theaters. I learned basic skills in set up and dismantle of a large variety of equipment. Because we were students we were expected to work a specified number of hours in each department. For example, lighting, sound, audio visual, stage crew, rigging etc. I am familiar with a number of types of lights and sound systems used in professional theaters and concert venues. I also learned assembly for truss and stage decks. I have a basic working knowledge of stage technology.
  • Rocky Point Haunted House
    Volunteer/ Scenic Student
Rocky Point Haunted House Sep 1998 - 2003
    Greater Salt Lake City Area
I entered the scenic and special effects world by first volunteering at Rocky Point Haunted House. I was able to apprentice under Cydney Neil, the Owner and Producer as well as the Head Production Manager, Bart Cox. I learned a lot about construction, basic pneumatic effects as well as some innovative design and haunted attraction concepts. I credit this show for me getting my first experience and my first taste of the industry. If not for the quality of this show and the superior standard I would not have learned nearly as much as I did during the 5 years I volunteered there.
